Me every game..
I'm actually fine with Supports building damage, but they shouldn't go glass cannon. Stuff like Talisman, Frozen, Righteous, Locket, etc can all be bought if the Top or Jungler isn't buying before damage.
Just help me ward and you can build whatever you want. Sadly its more common to see supports that go full damage and no one even upgrades trinkets... <_<

Not building damage on a support cripples their ability support.

Yup that GIF is the most accurate i have ever seen,,,,
What i did as a 1st time
.
Psh, 2 tank items into Luden's Echo on Shen or Nautilus. You start tickling then. Naut can actually 1v1 fed carries with tank+Echo. Oh and did I mention Shen has a stupid high AP ratio on his ult? It's great that a 1 AP item shen gives something along the lines of 800 hp shield on rank 2 ultimate.
Honestly, whether I build damage or not depends on my champion.
and the like don't need damage items because they have no utility that scales with standard damage scaling. But champions like
have utility scaling with AP, meaning they can get away with things like
no one really pays attention to what i build
its like im just a force of nature healing people while silencing the infidels!
But I like 1v3ing...
That was a perfect gif. Well done.

Does the support have Sightstone and Oracle's Lens (or at bare minimum Greater Stealth Totem)?
If so, they can build whatever they think will help us win the most.

All the damage and utility you could ever want as support with this build :D
I go AP Tank Nautilus when I support, and because there's a weird animation glitch with his basic attacks, I accidentally stole 12 kills :L
without damage items still hurts, so I'd say you'd rather buy something else like ardent censer, that would help your adc a lot.
But there are certain champions that's actually better if you build AP, for example
, I'd rush ardent censer, sigh stone, and talisman, then I'd go straight AP. Because it powers Janna's shield as well as her AoE heal.
And
, rush sigh stone and frostfang, then build AP. I'm in a loosing game one day and I turn down a whole teamfight with my ult. It was nice
