Over Innsmouth1 votesOne of the best things it did was not feel an overwhelming need to explain itself. It took some time during the prologue to lay out the setting, then let the world do the rest on its own.
You don't need to explain the idea that the Kaiju/Jaeger war would be turned into sports drinks and products, that's something that I'd believe comes naturally. Same with the ideas of Kaiju corpse-profiteering from Chau, and the idea that some people would worship Kaiju like gods seeking to cleanse humanity. That's all shit that people do in real life.
