Doran's shield is actually not half bad. Adrian Riven did a video on Riven VS Darius matchup. And in that video, he pointed out how Doran's Shield really discourages early trades. Doran's Shield seems to do some pretty good work. Though it falls off by mid game, while Blade and Ring both scale up. The damage reduction and hp recovery is negligible by 15 minutes. It's still a solid starting item for those trying to survive early laning.
