Lul. Probably ~80% of all sub-30 accounts are smurfs or bots. Maybe you'll get the occasional game where you go against all new players, but the majority of games sees a lot of players with gold+ main accounts.

Riot has a system that detects smurfs and pairs them together but like the first few games you are paired against starting players for the system to decide whether you are a smurf or not.

I'd actually really like to know how they could feasibly pull that off without new players also getting filtered up as "smurfs" and getting stomped on for 30 levels.

Remember the question they ask you on how much experience you've had with mobas when you first start league then they look at performance of the players also if they do unusual things such as a level 1 player without playing a single match all of a sudden buys ip and exp boosts.

Riot uses various factors to determine if someone is a smurf, you still get smurfs and starting players playing together but their system increases the likehood of new players being matched together and smurfs being match together. Riot probably have a lvl 1-30 mmr system so all players can have fun and play with people at roughly their skill level.

It would be interesting but riot will never tell us how they do it, they do have a filter system otherwise though as you said new players would be constantly stomped and would quit the game really early on.

Fairly certain it also takes into account your CS, your purchases, your score, etc. If you're a massive outlier in multiple things, you probably get grouped with smurfs. I read something on their support site about how they have a noob protection system type of deal that also fairly reliably groups smurfs together.

I would guess a lvl 5 under that knows how to cs is without a doubt a smurf. Also rotating on the map, when I was low lvl I just remember running down my lane.

Ah the good old days of pre-30 accounts. I still remember rushing attack speed on Annie because I came from Elsword, where my main character (Deadly Chaser) was reliant on attack speed to shoot faster. Got a item 1056 and 2 HP pots and nothing but daggers after that. Then I learned you could upgrade and got a Wriggle's Lantern.

My proudest moment as a beginner was stealing blue buff from our allied jungler as Garen.

Then IMMEDIATELY running down mid to die and giving it to the enemy midlaner.

While the enemy duo top pushed uncontested in a 2v0 lane.

My team was DELIGHTED.

Those good times when I started with league... first of all the 20min login queue...

I can remember playing vlad with vamp scepter, using xerath ult for waveclear, 6 nashors alistar, 6 nashors nautilus, 6 nashors sona... playing on twisted treeline only because summoners rift was too big and confusing... and then my first main: jax (bcz he looked kinda cool and ad, ap and health graphs were balanced). Built him with 6 hextech gunblades at first because him being a hybrid... until i got rekt by a darius who had 3 phantom dancers and 3 bloodthirsters... so I took his build and used it on jax. And dominated. Hard. (Just for reference: bloodthirsters gave up to 100ad each and the lifesteal was stackable. And phantom dancer gave 35%crit chance iirc. So i was running around with +300ad, 60% lifesteal, 100%crit and 2.5 atkspd and felt invincible) As I switched to SR I played bot lane because top felt too hard...

Well.... those were good times...
