For all the humour Riot works on, they'll never top how funny this was.
Still makes me chuckle.
Still makes me chuckle.
This remains the best accident.
It resulted in the following comic as well.

"Utility Assassin"
Literally who looked at that phrase and thought, "This! This is what this game needs!"
Literally the defining aspect of an assassin in this game is that they have High damage but little utility, maybe a slow or speed boost at most. For ekko they decided that giving him 3 slows, %hp damage, giant speed boosts, dashes, a giant AOE get out of jail free button, and a giant fucking shield that also acts as a stun was a good idea.
Who? Who looked at that kit and thought "This... this is really great. We should release this."

Fucking GypsyLord
Certainly noT anyone else....
He had nothing to do with Ekko, but I heard he is coming back for the Warwick rework
Prepare for the 3-passive Warwick.
and the incredibly stupid mobility
I guess he will end up with a dash, a shield, a knock up and triple crit passive...oh wait.
He'll also be manaless with free lifesteal and spellvamp.
Though I cannot forgive Gypsylord this gimmick he designed, it's possible Gypsylord wasn't the one to decide this aspect. it's possible he was given the task of utility assasin and had to do his job even If he agreed with us it's dumb idea.

He just doesn't have a good record. All of those above champs have been a large problem with overtuning or irritating design/mechanics at one point or another
Jinx is fine design wise, she's just usually overtuned. That is not the designers fault.
Gnar was problematic in the beginning because the top lane meta wasn't ready for him, since the juggernaut update and keystones he's had a pretty defined role in top lane.
Vi is kinda iffy, her ult is super overloaded, but she's usually pretty well balanced so it's hard to hate on her too much. What about her design is irritating would you say?
Jhin is up in the air, they're still trying to find a good place for him so I'll give you that he might be flawed in design.
Oh I know that some are fine now (my hate for Jinx is very personal and thus I don't throw her any bones... but that's my own beef)
And again, I said at one point or another ( so like the gnar mention and the jinx mention).
Vi is very balanced, but her ult is just very frustrating (but I play ADC and mid, so bias). I believe she was also overtuned on release, but that was just numbers.
In the end, it may be more my personal beefs and baises (except for Jhin and Ekko). But these champs still have a knack for when being overtuned, basically become the dominant pick, hands down.
To be fair, almost every champ is problematic balance-wise on release. The combination of Riot tending to release them slightly overtuned combined with nobody knowing how to play against them makes all new releases broken, so it's not like that is a unique trait.
i love gypsey lord tbh, vi ekko main
still better than Certainly T

imo Zyra Thresh and Yasuo are fine, but that's me.

At least his Zaun champions have pretty badass theme songs.
If the tank version didn't exist he would be in an excellent state actually. I am used to ap assassins and I loved Ekko.
I don't think a utility assassin is an impossible concept and having a variety of assassin types is good IMO. However, Ekko was a failure in that they didn't just give him utility, they gave him one of the best survivability tools in the game along with absurdly high base damages that allowed him to ignore offense and build more survivability ON TOP of granting him insane utility.
TL;DR: Utility Assassin is fine, Utility-Skirmisher Assassin is not (atleast Ekko isn't anyway).
im waiting on the support assassin. OH oh OH and the marksman assassin although i DID use to call vayne a marksman assassin...
do you think they'll ever make a juggernaut assassin?
my personal hope and prayer goes to the aura assassin - take the most overly hyped play maker and turn it into a boring aura based champion that conflicts with the very idea of anti-fun or whatever it was called.
Garen is a juggernaut assassin.
is he? or is he an assassin juggernaut?
edit
warden assassin then maybe? vanguard assassin? oh oh oh - how about an assassin that buffs the enemy team to death?
we'll call him fernando and he'll be tarics alter ego
Someone who assassinates is someone who deals damage. Support assassin is probably a concept that will never come true as they are completely opposite roles. You cannot support someone and prevent the damage done to them and still be able to kill others while doing so.
I also don't see any aura assassins as viable concepts as assassins are always the active champions while auras themselves require passive playstyle.
Juggernaut assassins will also never exist. They are essentially tank assassins who don't have any reliable ways of getting to their targets. Assassins are nimble, squishy, high damage champions. Juggernauts lack the mobility and gap closers.
Binary champions are always in a bad spot, balance wise. There is no perfect balance decision for them as they are extremely sensitive in the meta they are in. Too strong means too reliable and never good to pass up for something else while slightly nerfed means never viable as there are always better choices.
That's why champions need to have something unique to contribute to the team besides their damage.
I understand that but like... 3 slows a giant stun and a massive heal/gojf button? Someone like LB has a stun and great bait potential, shaco has his boxes, rengar has his ult which can split up a team fight without even actually going in... Sure, assassins like Katarina are unhealthy because if they don't get fed they are completely useless, but you don't need more utility than a support to have something to offer to your team.
Ekko's W and his R aren't reliable enough for anyone to raise an issue over it. LeBlanc was once considered a freelo champion, when she still had a Silence. And funny enough at that time, when LeBlanc was in her strongest form, people didn't utilize her properly and she had a 40-something win rate and was considered bad even by the pros.
Ekko's W is literally guaranteed to at least shield if he stands inside of it, and his R is an instant cast ability? I fail to see how these are unreliable. Also not really sure why you mentioned LB, but yes, the silence was stupid. Assassins should not be able to prevent enemies from reacting
The sheer fact that Ekko's W needs 3 seconds to be cast is what it means to be unreliable. If you see him cast it, no one stands and waits to get stunned, the fight usually moves farther than his prediction. The only people who stay are the ones who think they can kill him before that happens.
His R is also unreliable and it's not an instant cast. It has a delay to where he travels back to his image and then pops the ult damage. The image itself has a 4 seconds positional delay. Since you can also see this image, if you're not dumb, you certainly won't stand in one place waiting for the image to overlap with your position so that he can use it to damage you as well.
Unreliability means it's not guaranteed to be used against you. Both abilities give you ample time to react and see what's happening before it happens. He shouldn't be prevented from ever using his abilities but with a little hindsight from you, you can easily avoid the CC and the damage part of those spells. Meaning they only ever provide utility for Ekko and don't give him an advantage in fights in other areas.

No matter how many times you explain people would still bitch and cry about Ekko. It's the same with Illoai honesty, "omg why does she hurt so much!?" meanwhile said person is standing in her ult while fighting her.
I undestand him though. Ekko, when built as a bruiser/tank still hurts like hell and all of his utility gives him great survivability and movement in fights. When i see someone play Ekko full AP, i am also surprised how much damage he deals as he acts like a new champion completely.
However, Ekko's tenacity to stay in the meta, despite his nerfs is what makes him a successful champion. I'm not talking about the part where he builds what he shouldn't and stays even more viable than with his intended build. I'm talking about the part where no matter what Riot does to his damage, he is still getting picked because his kit provides much more utility that is useful to his team. If he was like Aatrox, the moment his damage gets slightly nerfed and he doesn't have any reliable ways of dealing it, he is literally one of the worst champions in the game.
Riot is trying to achieve precisely this - rework/update/make new champions that have something else to contribute to their teams besides their damage alone. Don't make super specialized champions because such champions when target nerfed fairly and appropriately, end up as one of the worst performers to date. Binary champions are bad. Versatile champions are good.
Is Ekko's kit overloaded? I don't know. I don't play him at all but i don't think so. I think that his damage is the problem and there's some work on other systems Riot needs to change in order to stop Ekko's wrong builds prevalence and that work will come in pre-season. It's simply not something they can change in the middle of the season (some Fervor changes).
To be fair, leblanc only has a root, no stun.

Then is colored surprised when people are playing as a hyper mobile tank instead of an assassin.
Aren't assassins meant to fight for prolonged periods while controlling their opponent's movements and be able to protect themselves easily.
Or is that literally anything but assassins.... Idk I'm sure it's one of the two anyways.
what we should see
<tank

or

what we normally see
<tank

i dont undestand [zombie-brand-facepalm]
No problem with the mage one tho, those were designed to be used on mages and BORK has been a core on ADC's for awhile now. (Also, ludens is in a bad spot rn)
yeah, but those arent staples of mages. they're more character exclusive and secondary buys. what the heck are 90% of mages going to do with zhonya 90% of the time? same thing with ludens. those are better used on ap based assassins who need to get in fast and get out. rod of ages is okay, but it better only on a few ap based fighters and tanks or battle mages that need the hp and mana.
blade of the ruined king is the only item that eats health. that's why. its passive should have been called consume and the active should have been called devour - not to be confused with consumables and devourer
Assassin >< Extended fights
Well, they dont stand there fighting sure, but as an assasin i love extended fights. Open with a gank, go heal, show up for clean up.
Well, what part of tank Ekko does that description not properly portray?
