They took out one of his big weaknesses when they reworked his q. He used to have a much harder time sustaining in lane because he had no health recovering ability. Now that his Q heals him if he hits stuff with it, it's a lot harder to bully him out of lane, and therefore deny him items and keep him more in check.

Noone expects the Bloody Darius! You just buy AD/Armor Pen and get Redbuff and Elder Dragon as soon as possible. Did I mention I play Darius with Deathfire Touch?
