[RESOLVED] 7/19 NA Ranked Disabled - Probably when you’re asleep

Hey all,

Riot is doing its best Santa Claus cosplay and giving gifts of new software to our back-end infrastructure. On Wednesday, July 19th we’re going to turn ranked off at 1:30am PDT and then from around 3am PDT till 8am PDT perform some proactive software upgrades to our network routers. As with any software upgrade, this will add various software optimizations, enhancements, etc. to make it easier to support and maintain the routers in the pursuit of keeping a stable service.

While everything sounds good so far, there is a slight catch: updating routers means that some players might be bumped on their current path to our servers and re-routed, which might cause some brief disconnects (Which is why we’re disabling ranked, just in case). We’ll keep a close eye on the maintenance, and if things get too out of hand, we’ll react quickly.

We will make sure to update this thread with any updates on the maintenance or when it’s completed!

Will there be benefits we'll feel as players (e.g. slightly lower pings), or just your standard "It's less likely to go wrong in the future thanks to this" type upgrades?

No immediate effects. Purely a proactive update to make it easier to work on the routers in the future.

Updates like these are appreciated as proactively updating hardware is great for longevity of architecture and scaling, as a future note; Perhaps it would be good to be able to link these sorta details into the client lobby or even status page so those who are curious and want more details can find this easily instead of scouring forums.

instead of a generic "server maintenance window" So people understand even after the maintenance is done that they run potentially botching their ranked games due to lingering routing issues.

Maybe even add an acknowledgement popup when people queue for ranked after maintenance windows when you know it could knowingly cause connectivity/latency issues. This way both Riot & Players take some accountability and acknowledgement.

Is this for NA only or for other regions? If for other regions will this be at the same time everywhere?

This post is just referencing NA. Some other regions will have ranked downtime, but will not be reflected in this thread

I hope this helps in the long run to have better servers in LAN. Having the server on the USA really affects Colombians and Panamenians as well as the few Venezuelans that still play. Even here in Mexico City is impossible to get your ping lower than 64 without buying routing optimization services. Latin America in general does not have the best internet infrastructures, so everything that can potentially help is welcomed

I hear you, but want to clarify what this maintenance is doing. This maintenance is unlikely to affect players outside of not being able to play ranked for a few hours. We're just making sure the software the routers use is up-to-date. We're not making any major routing changes or changes you'll see directly.

Hmmm...well one can hope. I am sure there are cost/benefit complications (lets be real on exchange rates alone LAN and LAS combined probably don't make as much money as NA) as well as probably server requirements that prevent the LAN server from moving south, but if at some point either the routing or the server itself could be improved that'd be very welcomed!

Are you seriously complaining about not being able to get "lower than 64ms ping" as you stated in your above post? You're in Mexico City and getting better pings than half of the American players. You're getting a very good connection, just saying.

I forgot to mention, I have a 50 mgbts per second connection, which is way high compared to what most people have, and even then the net gets saturated so lag spikes are common during rush hours. Most people usually have somewhere between 3 and 10 mgbts connections, which results in 90-120 pings

I think the idea of the comment was that you're making a silly complaint. 64 ms, like what? I'm playing with 200ms because of distance and the game is still perfectly fine.

I checked your profile and can see you are new to the game. As you gain more experience you will start to notice that to play seriously your ping can't be anywhere above 92; you can't react to stuff past that ping level. I don't even think the game is playable past 140, and that is a strech

Im not planning to do ranked games or something like that anyway so it's okay for me. Depends on what you're dodging, things like lux's R are dodge able and zacs dumb dive skill. Maybe there's some situations Idk.
200ms is big on certain games like MMORPGs, Suprisingly on LoL it isn't that noticeable. The game is pretty playable with 200ms in my experiences...it only starts getting bad when you go into the 300s, 400ms+ is just unplayable. Everything from last hitting to movement feels pretty smooth. But as I can imagine some tricks would be harder to pull off.

Tl;DR

The game is playable at 200 but of course it would probably feel clunky if you're used to playing at a 64-100 range.

Hmmm..hahaha take into account that if you are playing at 200 everyone will react faster than you do. I'm glad you are having fun playing the game despite your internet connection. But trust me if you ever get the chance to play on a faster speed you will realize what I mean

I was in a game, everything working just fine, then suddenly 500 MS. Everything else works fine, I can even chat with my friends in the client. Just can't back into the game. I get the above message. Restarted client several times. Can surf/youtube without any issues. Are you seeing tickets (outside of mine) popping up more than usual, possible because of this maintenance?

Wouldn't be because of the maintenance. It won't start until 3am (We turn ranked queues off a bit early to make sure we don't interrupt games in progress). If you're not able to connect now, there's something else going on. Good first step is to check out the Hextech Repair Tool (our automated troubleshooting tool). If should help give a better idea of what's going on

@RiotBok Any chance, you have a current ETA for ranked? I know the timing is always flexible when performing maintenance and updates, but since the time we were shooting for is past I thought you might be able to give us an update. I was hoping to get one game in before I pick my son up. :)

Dear Riot,

Just so you guys know. You are killing us people here in the central and eastern time zones. 8 am might seem fine and dandy in the Pacific time zone or even 9 am in the Mountain but having to wait until 10 am in the central or 11 am in the east is borderline ridiculous. Might I suggest starting these long down times around Midnight or even 1 am Pacific. This way there is the least possible interruption to those players who can only generally play earlier in the morning.

Can't please everyone mate. If they did that then you'd have the same problem for players who mainly play late at night.

And if I were to take a guess, I'd bet there's more of those than there are people playing early in the morning.

Hi Riot! Just a quick Complaint. I woke up at 7 this morning and played until 10. Every match i played, (Aram and Summoners Rift) Both teams have had an AFK who whould DC then Reconnect. Over and Over. At one point it was 3v4! I think this is out of hand... Pls Halp

Typically network based updates take longer than normal and have unknown side effects.

Riot has (potentially) lots of servers , load balancers and firewalls. Some of their changes take time to propagate throughout their network architecture. Especially on a server that is already live with games and users.

Sometimes these changes require restarting the server or bringing it down and spinning up a new one.

If you're in a live game during updates you always run the risk of unknown / weird issues happening. Because you're running old software on a server thats connecting to other roles that have newer updates. These sorta issues are unavoidable for any system that is live 24/7.

Just be patient and maybe find something else to do for a few hours and come back.

That's fine, but there is not word from Riot on an estimated time. If there is an issue they should let us know.

Coming from someone who does these sorta things for a living.

Its hard to give an honest ETA when you dunno what the issue is or how its happening and how to solve it. I would imagine when they have more information they will tell us or the issue will be solved and you'll go about your day.
