[COMPLETED] 7/20 Ranked Disabled - Upgrading NA Game Server Hardware

Hey all,

In the wee hours of the morning on July 20th at 4:00AM PDT, we’re going to disable ranked for about 4.5 hours in order to upgrade some hardware on the Game Servers in Chicago. Servers are a bit different than normal gaming PC’s, but hardware still works the same way -- every piece of hardware has a shelf-life, and eventually it’ll degrade or stop working. By pro-actively upgrading this hardware now, we can ensure the servers will remain stable in the future.

While we are switching out the hardware, we're also going to need to reroute connections to our game servers. This is where we may encounter some issues with disconnects, which is why we are disabling ranked pre-emptively.

If you get into a ranked game before 4:00AM PDT, you will be allowed to finish the game; we just won’t allow new ranked games to start.

We’ll make sure to update everyone on the progress or if we hit any issues!

For PST to EST, you add 3 hours. 4AM PST will be 7AM EST.

It's not a sticker, it's a picture from imgur. This picture is more accurately a facebook LoL sticker.

ok so I ACTUALLY usually play at 4am as I work until somewhere between 1 and 3 am most nights so this ACTUALLY sucks for me.

instead of updating a server that got like 0 problems in compare to others, you could update somestuff on euw. I got the feel that euw has atleast 1 problem that is ruining the game for hours every week.

Considering this is an NA Rioter making comments about NA servers, you should try discussing your desire for "updated stuff on euw" on the euw LoL boards? Might actually make a difference. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Just because you can write on here, doesn't mean it is a shared board for Rioters. Issues discussed here by Rioters are mainly regarding NA. If you have issues about your EUW servers, your boards are here. NA Rioters can talk to the guys over in EU, but you are better off talking on your own boards than having someone else do it for you :)

sure he does use graphics cards for the test but pretty much he proved hardware does not degrade rather it does become outdated, this DOES NOT MEAN that the load certain hardware was on has changed unless you guys at Riot HQ make some EXTREME CHANGES to the game. Anyways the hardware changes I'm expecting that you guys are doing is swapping out batteries for your APC units along with some performance upgrades to server connectivity. On a serious note though for server connectivity just swap over to fibber optics, you guys make more than enough money to afford it and more than likely you guys have someone who knows how to install it aswell throughout your entire system, it's a good investment for any company hands down even more so for a gaming company.

No, performances may not degrade, but that's not the point here. The hardware will just fail at some point. If you ever had a hard drive failure, you'll understand that. And if you had not, you're pretty lucky.

Hardware hasn't infinite life, and the point is to replace it before it is likely to fail.

If the hardware does fail at some point then it's more than likely an issue of failing to properly care for it. Consistent strain and overheating would be cause for concern when hardware does fail, understandably I know that the Servers can be under strain quite a bit, in fact it was made clear how much actual stress there was around mid-end season 4 a simple ddos attack on the servers cause it to be unplayable for many people not just in the US but worldwide. But that aside yes hardware can fail if the circumstances add up to its downfall, other than that normal maintenance and periodic checks should keep the hardware running way past its supposed expiration date.

You don't know what you're talking about. In Data Centers or Cloud infrastructure, for instance, it's so common to have hardware failures that you have to design your system assuming there will be one. Even if something has a 0.01% chance to break in one year, if you use 10,000 of them, you'll have one breaking per day.

"Maintenance and periodic checks" are no magic, stuff breaks with time, and you have to replace it once in a while. Preferably before it actually breaks...

Yea idk What Is Smite is talking about. everything man made has a shelf life. I've experienced hardware degradation at home and at work with our servers. Even with proper care and periodic checks, over time stuff weakens and/or breaks or for no reason at all, stops working. Safer when on such a big scale of operation to at a time either upgrade or replace the hardware. Thats common sense, I dont need a youtube link to prove that.

You are incorrect. As power surges through a piece of hardware, and heat builds up, it does degrade. The heat statement is especially true for Graphic cards, while the power statement is mostly true for Power Supply units. It just depends the hardware. The degradation is minor and it would take years to burn out if kept at proper temperatures, but my statement stands.

sounds like something that could possibly fix the disconnect from ranked champ select thing only? hype, it gives me so many dodges. I've tested the packet loss too so I know its riot servers not me

Yeah same here; my game crashed and it wouldn't reconnect. I tried logging back in and that wouldn't get me back in. I was doing fairly well at 7/4/3.
