Olaf rework is bad and you should feel bad
It has been nearly 3 weeks since the Olaf rework went live, and Olaf is in no better shape than before the rework. Since the rework his pick rate is 1%-2% and his winrate is still an adismal 41%. All that has changed is that instead of being unfun to play against Olaf, its now unfun to play as Olaf.
His kit as a whole feels clunky, disjointed, and unsatisfying. His abilities are loaded with free stats and built in cooldown reductions, but to utilize one of them, you are forced to waste the other. For example, Olaf lands an axe for the slow and the target runs a different direction. Now you are forced to decide on A)chasing the target with your slow on cooldown as they kite you, or B) grab your axe for the reset, but you not getting into AA range to use Reckless Swing and autos to lower its cooldown, again while being kited. Either way, you are forced to sacrifice the use of one of your abilities in order to chase or duel an enemy.
Team fights are even worse. The old Olaf that could be an unstoppable terror for a few seconds is long gone, replaced by either a meat shield with no lock down/peel or a melee glass canon with no gap closer. Again, Olaf can be kited into oblivion even with his ult, and because his best chasing tool is also an AD steroid, it is a decision to waste the extra damage or to waste the CC immunity; and both choices come at the cost of defensive stats. This version of his ult feels very unsatisfying because you are forced to sacrifice so much for not a lot in return.
And the worst part about this entire rework has been how the balance team-namely Morello and SmashGizmo-has communicated with the LoL community in regards to Olaf. Since the Olaf changes hit the PBE, many in the community have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the direction taken. There was a lot of suggested changes and constructive feedback offered, but Riot seemed to dismiss anything that suggested they were going about these changes the wrong way. Instead they took a "we know whats best" attitude and alienated a fan base that just wanted to see their character be relevant again.
All the changes made were done in the name of counter-play; made so others could actually fight against Olaf, but they went so far to achieve that goal that he isn't fun or satisfying anymore. So many ways have been created to beat Olaf, that as the Olaf player, it feels like a massive struggle overcome to those weaknesses.
The changes made dont seem to be for the better. It looks like Riot is intent on taking a character that filled a recogizible fantasy and easily understandable roll, and changing his gameplay in such a way, that it hardly feels like the same character. What used to be a rampaging, berzerking viking, is now just a lesser version of newer champions(Aatrox). Having any character be a lesser version of another is bad for the game and makes the fantasy and experience less satisfying.
It would be great to be able to play Olaf again and be able to enjoy it, but at this point, he doesnt even feel like Olaf anymore. His power was stripped away and changes were forced on him that give little satisfaction as the Summoner. You are forced into choices that seem like they are no-win and then regret it for even trying. In the end, why waste time with this character, when all he gives you in return are frustration and dissappointment. There are 115 better options than Olaf right now, and it doesnt look like it will change any time soon.
End Rant
