I read somewhere that dogs feel extremely vulnerable when they "use the bathroom". It's a compromising position for them to be in, and it makes them uncomfortable. So when a dog follows you into the bathroom, it's because they assume you feel the same way and they naturally want to be by your side and make you feel better.
Of course most people don't consider using the bathroom a big deal, but a dog has no way of knowing that.
