Just an Old Player.

Hey guys!

I'm just an old man, an old player who has been at this for too damn long. I've been tenured with RIOT and playing league for about 7 or 8 years, and it's time now to get some weight off my chest. I've lurked around on these boards throughout the years, reading all the hate, flaming certain RIOT employees, and burning down the trust between RIOT and it's player-base. Here's some news for you guy, RIOT doesn't owe you anything. Literally nothing. Doesn't matter if you spent 1000's of dollars or invested 10,000 hours of play time. At the end of the day, this company is trying to make a game....they are trying to make it fun and appeal to a large audience. They have had many success's and failures throughout the years and you know what....that's okay. It's all part of the process they gotta go through to know what good, and what's bad.
Now for full disclosure, I still suck at this game, have for a long time, and I don't particularly care for the current meta. That doesn't matter that much though. Balance, Live Design, and Lore teams all have stuff brewing, they are trying to make things right and get better....so just give them the time to do exactly that. Flaming, yelling, calling people out by name...that doesn't help, never has. One of the many complaints I read on here is that "RIOT doesn't listen (or care) about it's player-base." Respect is earned, and quite frankly....we have not earned it. We haven't come together to do something productive in a long time. We haven't held onto a meme (Armored bear anyone?), or hosted serious discussion for quite a while. If we continue to act like the rude customer at a grocery store, we'll continue to be ignored.....as we should be in that case. To you guys over there at RIOT, if you chose to read this old man's ranting, keep on rolling guys. You're trying to do what you think is right, You're trying to improve this game, make it right...and even though it has changed alot over the years, it's still a good game. It was fun when I was learning, and I still have fun playing it today. I know I am just 1 player, and that this will be lost to the internet in a few days, but come on guys, we are better than this as a community, we can be more responsible consumers, and more respectful users to the free service RIOT provides.

Much love everybody.

Riot is trying to make money. I don't think they're factoring in too much about what is "right" and I don't hold that against them. I would capitalize on my success too.

Problem is what they're doing is making the game unfun and causing people the quit the game.

and even though it has changed alot over the years, it's still a good game.

heh

Riot is not providing a free service, that is a fundamental misunderstanding of free to play games.

Riot is a company that is operating a business model. They owe me nothing, I owe them nothing. They want my money, I want a fun game. They provide the game, and I provide the money. They expect my money to be good, and I expect the game to be good. So far, I haven't tried to convince them that I'm a Nigerian prince and they'll get their money in a couple of months, but they've repeatedly ruined the state of the game through unnecessary or unwanted changes.

I've told them good job and thanked them when they've done things I've liked, and paid them for it at times. I've also excoriated them for doing things that I hate. Why? Because they're a private company that wants to earn my money, and me giving my feedback on things increases the likelihood of them doing something I like, which earns them money.

You see a lot of hate directed at them because people feel cheated. For instance, when solo queue was gone for a year, with Riot repeatedly stating that solo queue would be coming back soon, and then releasing a long video saying that solo queue would never come back. And then a few months after that, saying, "It was just a prank, solo queue is coming back, LUL." People have every right to voice their anger. Sure, some people end up looking like a rude customer at a grocery store, and a lot of them get laughed at by the rest of the customers. But sometimes the customer is right, and when that happens, it's really bad for Riot's business if they don't fix the problem.

You know what's funny? People who say things like that about the game, about stop complaining and having a positive attitude etc... are always low elo players. I am currently in diamond 4, I have got demoted 4 times there and climbed 4 times to diamond 3. However I can't seem to get past d3. Not because of my team or matchmaking but because of me. I just cannot tryhard anymore in this game, I try but I just can't.

The game right now is so unfun and frustrating that tryharding really feels like a sacrifice than an enjoinment and so I end up playing bad everytime without me caring about it.

Riot isn't trying to make the game fun. The reason why they change things everytime is because they want to keep players playing. Do you think people would keep playing if the game stayed the same after all these years? Also even if you find the game fun that is another story. You play in low elo, and low elo is completely different than high elo, it's like playing another game. In low elo I can just play ap yi and carry the game even if I make like 20 mistakes. In high elo instead one mistake can cost you the game. This and some other stuff make the game a lot unfun for me and many other players.

Legally speaking - yea they own us nothing. In other ways as well - You used your time and money to buy you some fun with LoL as medium for that. And they provided. You are even.

BUT As you see them sailing off in direction you find unfavorable you can come here and bitch about it. To make them hear if they would bother to listen. So you will be able to stick to this old game for a bit more. Some of the people are more passionate about their rants than others. You dont have to call all of that - HATE. Especially when lots of it comes from love. Love for the League and time you spent here. If people didint like the game they would not bother to say anything here about things they like about changes and things they do not. And ffs if people kept being quiet how would anyone know about problems that might not be so oblivious from stats and graphs?

Was in closed beta, preordered a boxed copy of this game, and have been playing pretty regularly ever since.

I am still Bronze.

I think of this game as a pastime, which is very cool to me. I hope it never dies (all my money gone!), because it’s like UNO, Monopoly etc. to me, it’s always around.

I like getting involved in the lore, reading the dev posts, and watching worlds. I have apparel from the game too.

It is bothersome to see the unfounded stabs at Riot, being puppets of Tencent, so they only make game decisions with profitability in mind (“make Zed strong so we sell more skins!”).

I play champs that I like (Galio, Rammus, Taric, Aatrox), and when I lose to perennial champs it’s not the balance team’s fault, it’s mine. Never felt the need to rage at someone I’ve never met, especially when the game will be different next patch.

I love this game, the people that make it have no hidden agenda in my eyes, and I’ll continue to spend my time and money here.

i feel like this wall of text is just rambling about a "who came first, the chicken or the egg?" scenario. Player feedback is what drives a game forward, end of story. circlejerking riot does just that, circlejerk. it literally adds nothing but more compliments to an already over inflated ego. next.

Well said. It's quite a shame the league forums have always been like this. There's a pretty good reason the league subreddit has way more interaction between players and rioters, despite the circle-jerky reputation it has over here as a place to kiss riot's ass.

Then again, there are 1 or 2 legitimately good posts, it's just that the Gameplay board is an overall cesspool where the trash is what usually rises to the top.

Ive only been playing since the end of S5, and I completely agree with what you said. I may not like some of the game, character or lore changes, but its RIOT's game, they can do what they will with it. Ill come back every now and then but to me the luster of the game died off somewhere the last two years.

Here's some news for you guy, RIOT doesn't owe you anything. Literally nothing.

You are absolutely wrong here and I'm an older player myself. We spent money on items that they change at their own whims. They've ignored the current and awful un-fun state of the game right now for the last 3 seasons. 90% of games are snowballing stomps. We as players ALL deserve better than this garbage and the same stale metas that a few champs are rotated in and out of depending on their popularity and skin sales. Its a losing business model in the long run imo (sure there will always be a few faithful like me and you..but its the same with WoW), and for a game and company that I, and many others out there have invested more heavily compared to other games, I would say that we are OWED at the very least a FUN and ENTERTAINING GAME.

As long as it feels like League it will be popular.

Plants were a mistake in my opinion and do not feel like the game at all, same with Skarner spires or Kindred 's mini-game inside the game.
