So...someone explain what's the fuss about the username change, please

As far as I know, I log in to my client, and there is nothing related to changing your username or anything all the while the boards is flooding with an outrage. I'm guessing it's that bad? But I don't know because literally any news I got about league of any sort so far all week are the following:

Username change
Aphelios gameplay on Youtube
NightBlue3 is Lebanese

Literally that's it. But what peaked my interest is the username so I chose to make a thread and find out more.

You aren't getting any message in game client, because it was put on pause yesterday. You may get e-mail with notification at a later date. Forced username change will be re-enabled at later date.

You should only be getting the prompt to sort out your username if it wasn't unique across all regions already, so if you haven't had to sort it out you should be right on that.

The reason a lot of people are complaining is because they have to change their username to update to a Riot account, and lots of people seem to have a "connection" to those usernames that I just don't personally understand. The username is literally just used to log in, I really don't get why people can't pick something different.

As far as I understand the situation, any username that isn't unique will prompt all accounts using it to change until only one of them is left, at which point that account gets to retain the username, so it's not based on "most recent" or anything like that (this is why it's recommended to deal with any alt accounts players have on other regions first).
