A plea to remove placements.
Riot, we need to talk. All my references are from two accounts I play, one is SilverEagleTwo and the other is La Belle Sauvage.
First, a concession; I agree, if a player does not belong in a division they will eventually climb out. However, that's not what I'm arguing against. The point is that the player base should not have to.
The single best thing you could do for a large portion of your player base is to remove placements at the start of every year. Where players end their season is where they begin in the next season.
I’ve played since Season 6 where I finished B4, Silver 5 in season 7, Silver 3 in season 8 and Silver 4 in Season 9. 3 of the 4 seasons I've finished Silver and it’s clear to me that I belong there. We the players deserve a chance to take a shot at the next division, which in my case is Gold.
However, I feel won't get the chance, because of how placements work. None of us should have to play 10 placement matches every year. This isn't entitlement, I am not advocating for Riot to move players into a division they don't belong. I'm advocating for allowing us to remain where we finish.
Once again, I'm stuck digging myself out of the depths of Iron and Bronze. After 89 games I'm still in Bronze 3. Currently I'm 46-43, which is decent, winning at 52%. Yet, consider how those 89 games chip away at my (don't laugh High ELO players!) Silver abilities. When I do make it to Silver again? I'll be at a disadvantage, because I spent more than 100 games digging myself out of two divisions, where I never belonged.
It is not fair to any of us when your system knocks us down after placements, where I suspect most of us finish at or below .500. I started playing Support in season 6, it puts both the actual new player and return players at a disadvantage and neither party learns much from that experience.
Furthermore it is wrong to burden one of us in bot lane with that new player, with the expectation that we can carry them. The result are one sided stomps, that lead to a lot of negativity during and after the game and frankly that new player doesn't learn much.
The single best thing you could do for your player base is remove placements. They're not needed.
Wherever a player ends their season is where they should start it.
Allow us the opportunity to improve. I take ownership of my games and, I make many terrible plays, but I will not own your placements. Every year it shoves us down and as a result it slows and sometimes stops the potential progress we make.
Before you do anything else? Remove placements for season 11.
