I'm currently doing an analysis/theory on Zed and Akali's history and their roles in the Kinkou/Order of the Shadow Timeline.
Long story short, Kayn was first and foremost born and raised in Noxus. Secondly, at the time Kayn would be born, Zed would have been a preteen/teenager. Still a part of the Kinkou. Kayn was 10 years old at the end of the Noxian/Ionian War, which ends 8 years after Zed and Shen are about to hunt down Jhin. They hunt him down for four years, and the War starts shortly after, probably within 12 months (if not a bit more) of Jhin's incarceration. Then, the Grand Stand at the Navori takes place well into the War, at least a year into it. Meaning that Irelia, who was 14 at the time, would be 17 at the end of the war, which occured three years after the Grand Stand. Then, Zed finds Kayn as a 10 year old, and takes him in. In the current day, Kayn is 17. There would be no possible way for Zed and Syndra to have produced Kayn, biologically and chronologically speaking. Moreso, we can presume that Syndra's magical power could be genetic as well, meaning Kayn would have possibly inherited it on some level. Which is not the case.

Well, most of my calculations have been fucked with the introduction of Akali's current age (19). But regardless, Zed would have still been too young when Kayn was born. Most likely, he wouldn't meet Syndra until many years down the line, after he takes Kayn in.
EDIT: A possibility is that Zed might have run into Syndra when he left the Kinkou, right before the War began, or maybe during the war itself, as he didn't immediately return to the Kinkou to reclaim his shadow box until many months into the War. But nonetheless, it wouldn't really affect any of it, since Kayn is from Noxus.

No, he does look up to Zed as a father figure and a Master. The only difference is, as far as we've been told, Zed doesn't exactly treat Kayn as a son, but more as another disciple. However, Kayn is the strongest disciple in the Order, so there may be some bias. This is also including the idea that Zed saw himself in Kayn-- someone whose talents and potential power were being used and wasted by fools.
Sadly, Riot hasn't stated anything about Zed and Syndra just yet. We don't actually know much about their relationship, nor when they met, nor how they met. I can presume Zed isn't one to bring his students along to meet with someone (also taking into account his and Kusho's interactions before the Massacre of the Kinkou, where Zed and Kusho supposedly were alone).

Nope. It's a side effect of being a Zed main while being so deeply invested in the lore. When it comes to Brand or Xerath, I could give less shits. But when it comes to my boi Zed, I go hard. The moment I see something that doesn't make sense in Zed's lore, I get straight to finding some answers.
