What is the actual player base of LoL? Is riot dropping the ball?

Player numbers

Riot hasn't released "Player numbers" or any update on the player base since 2014 and I can't help but wonder if its because the game has been losing its player base since the last time because of bugs, rushed patches, rushed champion releases problems with their servers and failed ideas that they wont change like the removal of SoloQ.

In the world's of 2014 we got a huge inauguration featuring "Imagine Dragons" in Korea with an enormous reception and a cinematic/song that was just gorgeous. Compare that to last years world's where we didn't get any inauguration celebration nor cinematic/song until really far into the tournament and with barely any work. And don't get me started on the All-stars after watching a full melee/support Korean team fighting a balanced Chinese team chosen by the "FANS", and watching riot trying to play it out.

This years we didn't get an "U.R.F. Broadcast and wacky competition" like we got in other years. Instead we got a previous urf release without any further balance or work into it. Not only that but its being released every other weekend flipflopping what riot said previously of not releasing it all year because of balance issues, instead they are just releasing it without any kind of balance. Also worth nothing, we are not getting harrowing events anymore but just skins like last years.

We also have a sticky: "Before you make a post about balance..." but is it really like what the post suggests?. But the numbers don't lie. Look at OP.GG or Lolking, the win ratio of the "op champs" have been above 60% and ban ratio above 70%, are we really all imagining those things?. I've heard only bad things since the Juggernauts patch making about 40 of the people in my friend list stop playing for months and countless reddit posts and board posts about it, mostly making players stop playing or playing less. And if you watched world's you would have also witnessed something that made a lot of people lose faith in the game: Mordekaiser Mordekaiser and Gangplank Gangplank. Those 2 were banned almost all games and had 100% win rate.

To conclude, is riot dropping the ball and league player base is shrinking?

I actually read a couple of articles on this, and have drawn some very interesting ideas on it. Let's start with the "human nature" element of it: people always want to talk about their positives and minimize their negatives. It's the idea behind photography (capturing people "at their best" ), and is a root philosophy of human nature in general. If you use this and look at riot, you could pose a somewhat valid argument that because they haven't discussed/"bragged" about their playerbase, then it hasn't been as big as it once was and the game itself has possibly peaked. Another idea is that people will always try to hastily sell off things they have no future use for if they want to move on from them (like how stores will go for "40-50% off" before they permanently close). While they haven't done anything drastic like that yet, if they do decide to increase the number of "50% off skin sales" that they do then it could be worrysome for the overall future this game may or may not have.
