Off-Meta Pick issues

Hi. I like to play Zilean in the mid lane. Now, the majority of games this isn't an issue, most of the time people are fine with it. However, the odd game here and there people don't believe in the Zilean mid pick and think I'm "trolling" or not taking the game seriously.

Other times, the jungler may come in for an early gank not realizing I'm low on mana and can't help much and blame me for being a useless mid and start flaming.

How do you avoid these issues with slightly off-meta picks? I don't even think he's that off-meta, I've seen him played mid by high elo players before. Sure, he isn't super common but he is still totally viable. I've been having a lot of success with him, and more importantly, a lot of fun playing him. It would be nice not to lose the game at champ select because someone tilts about my choice of champion.

You know, I think more skilled players would require less input and would generally be more serious about the game instead of having hissy fits. But until you get to these players, you have to contend with people not familiar or comfortable with your pick. I don't know how this gap can be bridged.

You could do like everyone used to and link your op.gg in champ-select.

As for the ganking, ping danger and then Alt-click your mana bar to show % remaining mana in chat. That's the best I can think of.

If you are having success with him just link them your op.gg. If they are assholes even after that, they probably were dickheads to begin with and would've been toxic either way. This is just their way of trying justify it.
