Weird Picks #52: Tank Mordekaiser Top

Mordekaiser Ah Mordekaiser! I started playing this champion back in season 4. I think I stopped playing him when Riot decided to remake Mordekaiser's kit as an adc. Furthermore, I think I really stopped playing him in general when I missed his "w" to give a "bonus" shield.

Since those changes, I don't think I have really played him. I really did well with DFG - does anyone remember those days? - (Picture of DFG for those that don't know) on Mordekaiser. However, those days are gone.

So, for those Mordekaiser mains I want know to several things.

  1. When do you go top with him? And, when do you like to play him as an adc?

  2. When do you like to like to build tank on him - as suggested by the posted article?

  3. When do you like to build tank with him? And, are Rylai's and Liandry's items good tank items or good damage items on him?

  4. What have you liked about Mordekaiser's new kit since his rework from last year?

  5. What are some tips to become the most effective Mordekaiser in game and in team fights?

  6. How do you compensate for champions that have gap closers?

i don't at all understand the hate people have for the rework from a player perspective. Mordekaiser is frankly a stronger, more mechanically interesting champion than he used to be. It's like when ICU claimed for the longest time that irelia was in a weak spot and then people started picking her up and did just as well with her or people claiming for the longest time that leblanc was a weak champ and couldn't carry games and would never see use outside of solo queue and then AFTER her dfg got nerfed, AFTER they removed her silence, AFTER all of these nerfs she became ubiquitous in LCS or people claiming zed was weak on release, that lucian was weak on release, that the POPPY rework of all things was weak on release

all the complaints i've seen from morde mains about the rework are nearly identical to the complaints people had about morde before the rework except that now most of the problems are only minor issues instead of major ones morde at least has a speed boost now, so he's not totally immobile he has built-in life sustain now in addition to his shield he has almost as much - though, granted, not quite as much - waveclear as he used to have his damage is still off the wall he /never/ had CC and his ability to stick to targets is better now than it's ever, ever been

the only valid complaint i've heard, really is that his matchups are more binary than they used to be
