Buying items go to same slot for hotkey purposes

Could hotkeys be assigned to items rather than slots? Alternatively should we be able to set up items so that, when bought, they always go to the same slot if that slot is free? There is nothing less cool than trying to use an item and then realizing you put it in the wrong slot because you chose a different item path that game. Or you simply forgot to move it like you normally do. There are enjoyable challenges in the game to fail to like missing a skill shot or failing to doge and then there is stupid stuff that is not fun like dying because you did not activate your pots or Zhonyas due to wrong item slot.
