QoL changes to Master Yi

when master yi activates his third ability wuju style his autoattack animation is reset,.

reasons to do this 1)consistency 2)hes extremely weak compared to most champs his style 3)wont affect the pubstomping Yi's that dont take much skill, will only affect good Yi's

reasonings 1)jax w vayne q garen q etc. 2)fiora jax jayce gangplank 3)cant prove but you know the pubstomping Yi's arent using skill

you should be itemizing attackspeed on mastery yi. as such what difference does it make if he has auto reset if he has so much as anways.

i guess you could also say what difference would it make to give him the reset right. it would help his early game of course when he's low on attack speed. and he already has ample jungle clear speed as is.

This isn't even QoL buff, this is an actual buff.

yi needs buffs really he is diving so deep in his dumpster that riot forgot about his existence

how is it massive? with rank 5 and 40% cdr he gets a whopping 1 more auto every 8.4 seconds

FantasySniper1 votes

Empowered auto-attack resets get you very far in fights. Master Yi already has his [W] to reset, but another one would let him proc his passive extremely quickly for huge burst.

windwolf7771 votes

Although I would like a MasterYi buff, it would also allow him to save meditate for actual healing or mitigation while holding onto the "second" AA reset (I put second in quotes as this isn't in the game but would be a hypothetical)

FantasySniper1 votes

There isn't a reason to buff him right now. He is already fairly powerful in both his jungle and top roles.

windwolf7771 votes

Understandable. And kinda wondering, how do you play him top? Do you build the standard damaging build with maybe a defensive item or 2 or do you build him a bit more tanky than the norm?

FantasySniper1 votes

Bruiser Yi hasn't exactly been too popular.

Glass cannon Yi simply works better because he already has his [W] damage mitigation and [Q] dodge to make what little time it takes to kill easier to survive.

3TWarrior1 votes

he IS an assassin after all XD he's supposed to delete someone and then either die or continue deleting XD

FantasySniper1 votes

Like Nocturne? Haha.

Bruiser Yi used to be a thing, and in fact most every fighter-assassin would build Omen+Merc Treads. I have no idea what caused the shift in build-pathing, but it happened.

3TWarrior1 votes

the carry and tank meta happened. tanks could outdamage bruisers and carries could delete them

also, noc is still an assassin...he's a bad one, but he has a 2000 range dash that makes it where enemies can't see their teammates even if he's killed, so it can be devastating in a team fight if the noc takes advantage of it

also lol, tanky nocturne is so funny XD he hits at like max attack speed and has so much hp/life steal it's ridic...shame he's not a more viable champ

FantasySniper1 votes

I love his whole theme, but unfortunately he just doesn't have enough CC to do the job with the damage tools he has. He's extremely similar to Warwick throughout the kit, but just doesn't have the same capability.

3TWarrior1 votes

well, full crit yi can do 1396.5 damage (before armor, runes and masteries) to every champ hit by his Q (if the text means that his crit rate is reduced by 40% according to the site) or 2061.5 if it is an additional 60% while still having a lethal auto attack of 1250 damage, so depending upon how damaged their carry is upon initiating, yi can take them out in one go and proceed to decimate the team

if he flashes in and has tenacity + his ult + the on hit 12% move speed, he goes on a reset rampage

attack speed yi gets his resets faster and does more damage overall in the game, but damage yi kinda trumps that when his Q is only 3 seconds anyway because of his ult and that duration is used up by the animation of his Q

FantasySniper1 votes

No, no, I was comparing Noc to Warwick.

Noc has his fear and his trail, but that doesn't mean much with how long it takes to kill someone with it. Meanwhile Warwick can lock someone down and then is overall just better at teamfighting with his [W], vision on low-health targets and natural tankiness.

3TWarrior1 votes

well that's good, those values need to be multiplied by .8 I think. I just tested in game and for some reason infinity edge and lord van dam's pillager don't affect his Q damage...which is stupid...they're supposed to multiply critical hit damage

FantasySniper1 votes

Critical strikes with Alpha Strike are only increased by 60% AD, and with Infinity Edge, it's 90%.

Glass Yi is bad IMO because you get killed in 2 crits by an ADC if you get stunned.

Bruiser Yi with a randuins is the scariest thing in the game because if he gets to carries, he still kills them in 2 seconds, but if he gets stunned, he also tanks substantial damage for his team with armor/HP from items, multiplicatively scaling with W. If he gets peeled, NP, he can stick to targets with 3 slows (blue smite, randuins, BoRK) and a resetting gapcloser.

You said later that he isn't as good as Warwick. But that's because of your build, not because of Yi. With randuins, Yi is stickier than WW because WW has no gapcloser outside his ult. Once he burns his ult and the target isn't dead (due to peel or just tankiness) he gets kited like crazy. Warwick is inferior to Yi in all aspects except he has the ult. He farms way slower, doesn't do anywhere near as much damage and all of his tankiness is from items, just like Yi. If Yi builds tank, he does way more damage than WW and is just as tanky, and most importantly, he can actually buy those items through farming, without having to take kills from every lane.

I am a 300+ game over 2 seasons Yi main in plat 3.

Glass Yi doesn't die so easily. If you play him smart, he comes in for clean-up, and then there's no one left with the CC available to stop him from killing at least one target - no matter who they are because he shreds through literally everything and snowballs quite easily in teamfights after a single enemy death. I rarely see people use Stalker's on him, as Skirmisher's is a more powerful tool with his already impressive stickiness.

When I was talking about Warwick, I was comparing him to Nocturne. Yi and WW are very different, and there's no comparing their playstyles or builds beyond a dependance on AS.

BluePolarizer2 votes

you shouldn't use skirmishers on yi. his damage is high enough, his problem is sticking early game. with skirmishers you are basically a melee minion pre6 and no one is scared of you.

the other problem with glass yi is that it is a very expensive build. in particular, bf sword is a huge investment. hybrid items like hexdrinker are better, imo. because they are not only overall cheaper but increase your power as you build them incrementally.

also, playing yi as cleanup assumes you are ahead as a team. why do you assume that is the case? especially if the enemy has a gank jungler. what then when you are behind and your team gets engaged? sometimes you are the only melee on the team and have to dive second or even first, what then?

I have alot of experience on Yi in high elo. mayne you should consider my points .

FantasySniper2 votes

Master Yi never ganks very well before his ult, and if you're ganking at all, the Stalker's will help less than the Skirmisher's - especially when it comes to tanks and immobile mages. Both tend to stop Yi's ganks short and make most of the time he was on them pointless. Master Yi can use Youmuu's active and his ultimate for plenty of stickiness later on, anyways.

You only buy BF Sword once for IE or maybe Merc. Scim. Not a problem considering how easy it is to farm and/or get kills with him. Getting something like Black Cleaver, Frozen Mallet, Maw, or Merc. Scim. is done quite often. Very few items he buys have no real payout before completion.

"Cleanup" means: after the engage. It's the same strategy used by every fighter-assassin with an extreme vulnerability to CC. Engaging with Yi is a very bad idea, but worth it if you can kill even one target and get the snowball happening. With Yi's damage, he shreds through any target he wishes and with Skirmisher's he can even assassinate tanks.

I've already considered your points. This is why I'm making counter-points of my own. Looking from your ranked games, you have apparently given up on using Skirmisher's entirely since before the 5.1 patch. Please do tell me if you've actually tried to use it outside of ranked.

BluePolarizer2 votes

I have alot to say about using Master Yi. It is a good discussion to have with you, seeing as Yi is one of the most hated "noob champs" in the game yet he has a deceptively high skillcap both mechanically and strategically. I'm currently in the process of writing a guide that shows my philosophy on using Yi, which is very different than most guides out there.

For your points: I don't use skirmishers on any non-tank. If you do the math, on anyone with better than 1.0 attack speed it is better to use chilling smite to land 1-2 extra autos. On fighters I exclusively use chilling smite. I only roll skirmishers when I play a tank that needs damage but can't build any actual damage items. I almost never use rangers or poachers.

You must realize that Yi is not actually all that impressive when 6 slotted because in a late game teamfight, anything can happen to a relatively squishy (no instant defensive steroid) melee. You could instantly delete the enemy carry off an engage. Or you could get engaged on and instantly deleted. You really don't know, as long as the game was even until then. Thus, I build for mid-game snowballing and skirmishing, and just either directly win the game before it goes late, or amass a HUGE objective/gold advantage so that it is almost impossible to lose.

windwolf7771 votes

.......(no instant defensive steroid)

Wouldn't meditate technically count as one? Channeled but still

And also about this point

...bf sword is a huge investment.

Don't most yis go for item 3153 and either a item 3087 or item 3046 first before a BF item?

BluePolarizer2 votes

You should never think about items beyond your first 10000 gold pre-game. Everything afterwards is situational. I almost never get shiv or dancer because they're terrible in the mid-game. I also almost never get BF sword items because at my elo, you won't have the chance to farm for them without your team collapsing due to enemy pressure.

Meditate, if timed incorrectly, will be a 1 time use thing in a teamfight. You don't want that. So it is not really instant. In a duel its different. All you need is to mitigate 1 key spell, use the autoattack reset, and it completely turns the duel.

Awesome :). Thank you for this info then. Could you actually help me out then? What would be your progression in some general circumstances? Like, bad game vs (ad/ap), average game vs (ad/ap), and ahead vs (ad/ap)? Just curious at what you like and how to incorporate that into my playstyle as you seem very knowledgeable about Yi :). Kinda rusty as I ground to 30 against bots tbh :/

FantasySniper1 votes

"Noob champ" made me laugh. I have friends who say that Yi is a no-skill pub-stomper that is only there to be a bitch in games. My friends are not very good >.>

The unmitigated true damage is actually more efficient than more 3 autos at any level. That's why using it to kill faster before they get away is more reliable than having to chase them.

You never use anything but chilling smite, and that's why I doubt your opinion on using anything but. Challenging provides an instant defensive steroid on one target, reducing their damage to you by 20%, this is very important when picking out the enemy carry because they alone cannot fight back and will die fast enough that the kill is almost guaranteed. Yi has all the stickiness he ever needs - his ultimate, BotRK, Ghostblade, you can even count Randuin's Omen. It's redundant to rely on chilling smite when he already has such powerful chase tools available to him.

Playing smart is how you avoid such defeats. Glass cannon Yi is viable because you can avoid death long enough to kill targets, and then move on to the next. He can carry games and assassinate, so there is no issue of a certain enemy member getting fed.

BluePolarizer1 votes

You are thinking like you will be lvl. 18, full build all the time. I never think that way. I only think about my build outside of the game up to 9000 gold or so. Everything afterwards is situational for in-game.

the true damage from the smite maxes out at 378 over 7 seconds for 100 true DPS.

2 autos at lvl 18 with 250 AD and a 50 stack devourer (80 true damage from Wuju style), which is equivalent to slowing the enemy enough to get 1 extra second of autoing, already deals more than double the damage of challenging smite, not counting the damage from chilling smite itself.

Also, chilling smite is way better early game.

FantasySniper1 votes

Where are you getting this "full build" stuff from? Yi builds Cutlass fairly early, and the Lv 6 power spike is a guaranteed part every game.

Again, the unmitigated true damage is actually more efficient than 3 autos at any level. Having the damage from the very start of the fight instead of the potential later portion of it is infinitely better. You're relying too much on the idea that will have the opportunity to chase your opponent down for as long as you want, but we both know Yi doesn't work that way.

Jax's Q, Vayne's Q & Garen's Q are single active casts. Yi's E is passive cast, and making him reset his auto-attack on cast is actually not fair at all.

I'm sorry what? Can you explain? Do you mean that they interrupt current orders or something? Or am I just misunderstanding you?
