Riven's Shield Denies Trading Her Effectively (Let's Get Focused About Her Problems)

Riven Build Guides :: League of Legends Strategy Builds

TL;DR - Riven's ratios for her shield are too much, along with the base level 1 amount giving her ridiculous trade potential against a majority of top laners. Combined with her gap closers on top champions that rely on poke, and her hard CC (both of them), she just trades unfairly. Her late scaling for the shield is bananas (400+ absorbed damage by level 13) and either her mobility or more preferred, her shield, should be nerfed.

Main Ideas:

A little background to who I am and what elo this may be relevant in.

I am a Plat II player, Season 1 player.

When Riven was released, I knew right away that the only way to fix her was that flabbergasting shield. The shield scaled extremely well into late game. Let me break down a little bit of rudimentary math:

  • Starting with a standard longsword and pots, by level 3 (which is when you would want to get the shield, or level 2 if harass is strong) the shield is at 118 damage blocked with about a 9.5 second CD (running a little CD glyphs).
  • Using Mark physical dmg runes
  • By the time you hit level 13 or so, you've maxed out the shield
  • Around this time, Hydra plus another longsword or 2 for Youmuus should be completed if lanning phase has gone decently (not even in your favor, just keeping up with CS) , by then your AD should be around 200-220
  • The ratio for the shield is 1 per attack dmg, equating to 200-220 bonus shield.
  • 200 + 210 (fully leveled shield) grants a whopping 400+ absorbed damage.

Lanning phase:

I honestly think that the shield level 1 is too much. At a trading instance, riven can lock you up and still get a shield, which will negate a good portion of damage that you do to her during that trade (if you can even get an auto off with all her CC chain going off). The counter to this is poking, but here's the thing, champions that have a mana resource (malph, mao, irelia) are completely are her whim. Irelia can only E to stop Riven's exchange, but Irelia has to immediately back away or else massive dmg will be taken, and even then, she'll be caught by Riven's mobility. But I digress about champion A vs champion B. My point being, the only way to counter riven is ranged sustained poke (Vlad, Sion, Chogath, Ryze, etc) . In blind pick, you're basically screwed if you aren't already going top as this.

Insult to Injury:

Getting further into lanning phase, if Riven is having difficulty with exchanges, she can simply level up E to farm up and keep sustain, using Vampiric Scepter to keep pace.

Mid - Late Game:

Let's get down to the nitty gritty. A 400+ shield for secondary engages (or primary if your team doesn't have a tank jungler) is nothing to scoff at. She can engage and quickly eat 1 or 2 CDs from the enemy team, hopefully not get fully blown up since they focused the primary engager first. At this point, she's gunning for your ADC with her quick mobility and still having decent health, doing AOE damage + stacked AOE damage with Hydra. Sure, you might say hard CC is her counter, which I agree, it is. But when you have a champion that has done decently in lane, great dmg mid-late game, you're fighting a triple threat team (ADC, top, Mid). Using that CC on Riven might not be the best option (unless it's for peel or a good catch).

Ending Statement:

Basically, all I'm saying is that Riven has very little risk aside from shutting her down with hard CC, which, hard CC negates most carries anyways. Her shield seems a little OP in scaling and also in beginning base amount and should be seriously considered in the next patch for nerfing. I've refrained mostly from talking about Champion A vs Riven, as skill matchup plays a good factor in that, but given that Riven has a decent lanning phase, she's too much of a threat without the consequence of damage sticking to her because of that shield. Along with her mobility, she'll escape before you can chunk her down. Mobility or shield, somethings gotta give on this nerf.

The shield scales such that +1 point of bonus AD = +1 HP on the shield.

Let it sink in for a second. 1 HP per 1 AD. When AD is worth about 36 gold per point and HP is worth about 2.7 gold per point.

And the shield is temporary. Unless you throw literally everything within the same second, she's not going to make use of the whole shield's HP.

By no means is it a weak shield, but in comparison to AP-scaled shields and defense itemization, it's not an excessive shield either. It's strong enough for a melee carry to actually, y'know, survive melee combat.

Her shield is easy to bait out...lol.

Yeah, if you allow yourself to get dived on, it may be a problem, but if you are trying to fight Riven in her face, you are facing her in her turf and you should feel the wrath. That's the tradeoff for getting relentlessly murdered by any ranged laner. Treat it like Yasuos; bait it out, then when it disperses, unload the rest of your barrage.

Sorry people are being salty. I'm upvoting you because this is a well-thought out thread, and it's a valuable contribution to the discussion.

Having said that, I respectfully disagree. I think Riven is okay. She does snowball hard, but some champs can and I can live with that.

Lol really? Because just hit her once with her shield down and she'll probably be outtraded

Diamond 1 Riven main here! oh and i'm a girl gamer btw

I wish Riot would nerf Riven's shield and buff her W so she would max W second instead of E. The shield expires before it absorbs damage anyway, I use it to cancel W+Q animation most of the time.
