I'm playing just fine, now I'm lagging some, now I can't move, now I'm dead; Attempting To Reconnect

Son of Mu·10/11/2014, 3:26:07 PM·64 votes·16,882 views

Seriously, what's going on? I've lost several ranked games lately because of this. I have a good internet connection. I often listen to Pandora while playing, and my connection to Pandora never cuts out, which is what would happen if I really did lose my connection to the internet. I check my ping by pinging www.google.com in cmd, and I get a solid (NOT fluctuating) ping between 22 and 28 ms. How is it possible then? Script kiddies intentionally lagging other players out of the game? I can't help but think that this is the case sometimes.

Recently I had a game as WW top vs. a Darius. Unfortunately a really bad match-up for me. I'm unable to farm because Darius can zone me with his Passive+Autos+Q, but I can wait it out, just not feed, farm as much as I can under the tower, wait for ganks, and wait for teamfights. I'm keeping my distance behind the wave... weird, there's a noticeable delay when I click to move my character, oh... now I can't move at all. Darius sees that I'm just autoattacking minions so he freekills me for first blood. Walking back to top lane, I notice there is interestingly no delay any more when I click to move my character. Maybe it was a random, unlucky burst of lag. Now I'm even more-so keeping my distance because I know he can now 100-0 me in one combo. No lag, keeping distance, farming under tower, wave pushes out again, I follow the wave, only to stay in XP range... hmm, there's that lag again, oh neat, can't move again. Darius sees me autoattacking minions and freekills me again. Game is now a loss at this point because I'm too far behind, Darius is too far ahead (he killed the jungle too because of being ahead), and my team is yelling at me in allchat, even though I tell them it's not me/not my connection. INTERESTINGLY, as the match goes on, I didn't lag ANYMORE AT ALL for the entire remainder of the 30-35 minute match. We still lost, but it was no surprise because we were losing the entire time. But it's almost as if the Darius (or someone) was doing it intentionally, got the lead he was after, and then stopped doing it because he knew he didn't need to anymore -- now he can just kill me (and anyone else) "for reals".

I've had SEVERAL games like this, where it seems VERY LIKELY that someone is intentionally doing it, because it will happen at "fishy" times. Has anyone else had this happen lately?

Again, I know it's not MY connection, or else I would lose connection entirely (i.e. I wouldn't be able to load a website).

I've had the exact same problem for the past few weeks. I can almost set my watch by it on the NA servers. It happens 1-3 times per game when it occurs, and at the very least it occurs once every other game.

The game will randomly appear to "freeze". The rest of the game continues to go on in real time, however I can no longer issue any commands or talk in chat. I can watch my character auto random nearby targets. I can watch the enemies collapse on me and kill me unable to do anything about it. Even worse, several times just before the random D/C(not even sure exactly what it is) my jungler or I just pinged an enemy and I have to watch in horror as I can't ping him back and he dies or has to blow summoners because he assumed I was coming.

Its rendered NA unplayable for me recently and ironically for the first time in several months I actually have a stable internet connection. Like the OP i listen to Pandora while I play, the songs play right on through the D/C. This also occurs when Pandora is NOT on, I turned it off just in case, because conspiracy.

I've resorted to playing on LAN for the time being. The ping is way way better and the problem I have on NA is non-existent on LAN. The timing is really crappy with the end of the season approaching. I've seen a few threads about this over the past few weeks over on old GD, but it seems to be occurring to only a minority. I do not have a mac. The problem is current as of today.

Ever since patch 4.17, my lag/ connection issues have increased tenfold. I used to never get ping spikes, let alone lag, and i might get a bugsplat/ dc once in 20 games. I've had severe lag in 2 of my last 5 games, bugsplats in another, and it just keeps getting worse.

meatslab10/11/2014, 7:29:18 PM9 votes

Been having the same issue ever since 4.17. It's annoying to say the least, the worst part being that I can still type in chat for a few seconds after DCing and get to watch myself die to my lane opponent because I literally have no control. It's remarkable to me that the NA servers can be this bad after being so decent for so long (been playing since S1 and never had issues like this) and it's INSANE to me that there isn't a single comment from a Rioter in any of the threads about this subject, or at least none that I've seen.

I live in central US and it happens to me too all the time lately. I will be playing with no issues then out of no where my ping goes up to 2-3000 it then will stay at 500 and I will receive the "attempting to reconnect", but it never will. So I exit game, reconnect and sometimes it will be fine for 5-10 minutes or lag out immediately. I've resorted to giving up playing ranked games now since I just lost my second and third of my promos and of course I'm the one at fault since it's my lane who has the freely farmed, over leveled and fed of me and my jungle since it often seems to happen right before my jg goes in for a gank and I can't ping him back so now there's a free double on top of everything else. Oh andand It happens in normals for me as well.

At first, I was certain it was due to my wife streaming movies on Netflix since it would seem to fix it if she would pause or close. Then after that, it happened without the other computer even being on... so now I'm closing the game 3, 4, 5 times a game just to make it through in order to not receive a boot for inactivity. I've evrn tried reseting my router since that seemed to have worked before...but not anymore. I've even checked out PVP.net but all I have learned from that is, "you're responsibility for what happens on your account" and, "you should set aside 40 minutes of uninterrupted time before playing".

All in all I've really started getting into lol again but with these issues and my favorite map, TT, now a pile of horse manure due to the sudden up rise of bot programs farming for players while at work or in vacation -what have you- I see very little more to keep me playing this great game I've come to enjoy.

I know this was primarily a rant but it does help to get this off my chest and just maybe something positive will come out of it.

Nikm10/11/2014, 7:12:31 PM6 votes

Yeah, im having the same problem. it happens across both queues i play, and even in queues where im with friends. (queues i play are solo queue and normals 5v5). 6 of my friends dont have this problem even if they have the same ISP, however, one of my friends experience the exact same thing every game like me (he uses a different ISP). I'm not sure what it can be. Sometimes ill be walking into lane from river, then i cant move, ping says its high except it also does not move when it should (it freezes), and im just standing there watching someone walk up to me and basic attack me to death than go cs some more. i cant move for about 10 seconds, then the entire game stops moving. i reset my router sometimes, but either way, my internet connection stays fine while i disconnect from league. the only solution i found was to quit the game and reconnect and now im playing with normal ping again (until i get that random dc). when i do dc and stay in the game waiting a few minutes, i stay dced. if i get dced i must leave the game and come back. This confuses me =/. not sure how to fix. it started happening to my friend a few weeks ago, and this started happening to me a week ago.

Guerrilla8510/12/2014, 6:05:25 AM4 votes

Same exact problem. It's gotten to the point where I refuse to play/pay anything to this company until it's fixed. It's getting out of hand. Get an "Attempting to Reconnect", even though my internet connection is fine which forces me to have to quit the game and come back in because it refuses to reconnect on it's own. Getting tired of this stuff.

Slaaneshine10/11/2014, 5:27:58 PM3 votes

This has happened to me in a game recently. I don't feel so alone anymore. I'm a west coast player, and beyond the freeze spikes, had no ping issues. I had the spikes, after about 7 minutes into the game, constantly between minute intervals.

oh you wanna die10/12/2014, 2:37:08 PM3 votes

welcome to hell, i get this every game.

StMichaelXI10/11/2014, 11:35:49 PM3 votes

Looks like Riot's server are doing terrible in NA again. Great job beating a dead horse. Same issues as September with the lag and DC's.

Nommi10/12/2014, 12:37:43 AM3 votes

literally had a game like this 1min ago, only it happened around 6 times in a row. Around 20 mins it starts to reconnect for no reason when I just engaged on the enemy botlane,

I close the game, reconnect through client, and when I get into the game again, I cant even move out of the fountain(but I can see everybody else is playing perfectly). I had to repeat this process for 6 times before I can walk out of the fountain, then I proceeded to lose my game. I keep a command prompt open pinging the server when I play, my ping in was 80-90ms the entire time.

Region:Canada,Toronto ISP:Rogers

Long Dong Wukong10/12/2014, 3:07:28 PM3 votes

Yeah, it's packet loss.

It's on Riot's end, too. Usually happens to east coast.

There's little hiccups where your character stops listening for a second or two, and then there's full on I CAN'T MOVE EVERYTHING IS RUNNING IN PLACE OH IT CAUGHT UP OH THEY GOT BARON AND WIPED MY TEAM COOL

clickhead10/12/2014, 4:43:29 PM3 votes

Since the last 3-4 days, this is how NA has been. I don't think it is intentional from the players, because I get the same lag in dominion and no one would care enough to ddos in dominion. I live in East coast so naturally my ping is around 110 normally, but since the last couple of days my ping is always a solid 160 (which makes it very difficult to play the game, and makes it impossible to play champions like Riven). But every 30 second, my ping increases to over 9000 for 2-3 seconds (even though my internet continues to work just fine). It's just that NA is buggy as heck right now but not that many people are talking about it because NA being laggy as fk is now considered pretty normal.

Drukyul10/12/2014, 2:39:40 PM3 votes

It was once per game last patch, which was annoying but I could deal with it.

Now it's more like 3-5 times per game.

Vanilla Bunn10/12/2014, 5:42:51 AM3 votes

This has been happening to me also. Never lose connection to skype or anything else I'm running.

SmokingPuffin10/12/2014, 5:15:29 PM2 votes

I check my ping by pinging www.google.com in cmd, and I get a solid (NOT fluctuating) ping between 22 and 28 ms. How is it possible then?

Google is everywhere; every router in the world knows how to get to Google, and usually it's only a couple hops. League is a smaller company with less interconnections to work with; they rely on a few paid ISPs to get their content out the door. If one of those ISPs happens to be routing your stuff, and they also happen to have a peering dispute with your ISP or some other Internet company between them and you, service can experience spiky packet loss.

Script kiddies intentionally lagging other players out of the game? I can't help but think that this is the case sometimes.

This does happen, especially to people that are on Skype while playing League. It's not really the core story. The core story is simply that the rise of Internet video is breaking business models and causing many Internet companies to refuse to add more peering ports to some other companies. This is largely for legal reasons -- companies aren't allowed to treat VOIP packets differently than other packets when on their network, but if they know a company ships tons of VOIP packets, they are allowed to not do business or do only a limited amount of business with that company.

I've had SEVERAL games like this, where it seems VERY LIKELY that someone is intentionally doing it, because it will happen at "fishy" times. Has anyone else had this happen lately?

Your story does sound like potential DDOS, although it could also just be caused by bad luck and fixed by adaptive routing algorithms. We know that Riot is being targeted by DDOS attacks, and we know the most successful kind of attack these days is aimed at an individual user or border router; Riot servers themselves are now very hard to bring down.

Again, I know it's not MY connection, or else I would lose connection entirely (i.e. I wouldn't be able to load a website).

It's not your connection to the Internet. However, the particular path from you to Riot is probably about 20 hops long. If any of those hops are using an oversaturated port, your gameplay experience is going to suck.

If you want to test the theory, consider playing League at weird hours. If you see no issues then, and issues during primetime, then you have a problem with VOIP oversaturation.

On the other hand, if you have random spikes of suck at all hours of the day, you probably have a brittle router between you and Riot. You can repair this by getting a VPN service and bouncing your packets off Seattle or Austin or something when things get bad.

Tapu Fini10/11/2014, 10:16:44 PM2 votes

This sounds like packet loss. It can be Riot's problem, particular ISPs, or something going on at the user's side.

Best thing you can do to help them out is use their packet loss tester and post the results here.

I just got demoted to Silver 3 today cause of this issue.

Been getting freeze spikes as well ever since 4.17. Kinda tired of it.

Sandstorms10/11/2014, 9:18:14 PM2 votes

I have had a similar problem happening to me except that when I dc, I spike to 500 ping and then have to reconnect back into the game. I know it isn't my internet because every time it happens I load up google and search something random.

Im glad im not the only one with this problem. My friends that i play with are also lagging and dcing. I lost sever game because of it. I tell my team that i'm lagging in game and they never believe me untill I dc.

TenSlashTen10/12/2014, 2:52:15 AM2 votes

Yeah NA/LAN are getting rekt. NA has terrible Hops between ISPs this year. Its absolutely disgusting. I'm starting to consider going back to KR again (when I can afford my VPN again) and not coming back this time.

I thought maybe switching to LAN would help a little but its done nothing. North american ISPs are just getting man handled these past couple of years and Its not improving. Yesterday I was trying to download somthing on my fiber connect and was barely chugging at 20mbps absolutely disgusting.

oh and speaking of downloading. Riots new patcher is HORRIBLE. it clamps me at under 10mbps and I was even (at one point) getting 0mbps I WAS DOWNLOADING AT LIKE 70 KBPS.. dude.. 70kbps.. what is this,,,, the 80's?

i would attempt to reconnect every game i would be in, and when i would reconnect it the loading screen would pop up like it would normally do, but then it would be at like 40% then the game would start. and then usually after that when im in a team fight i would want to use my d and f spells but for sum wierd reason it wont allow me to. if been finding that everytime i would be engaged ina ateam fight or finihed one i would all of the sudden attempt to recconect and be in this cycle again. please, by god please do something about this cuz it gets really irratating when it happens every game. my ping would be normal but suddenlt jump to 500 and then i would attempt to reconnect, idk if it is the new patch but something is definaltey wrong here. please help

I have been having this problem since the 4.18 patch today my ping hit over 2000 and I'm becoming so useless and hits making this game suck for me.

Rozencrantze10/12/2014, 5:24:50 AM2 votes

I have been having this exact same problem. My last game my entire team had this problem except Malz. None of the enemy team lagged or DC'd at all. Everything else works for me except League for some reason.

Sigma11710/12/2014, 10:22:58 AM2 votes

So it's not just me?!

If it's a server issue causing this, then it's on more than NA since I've been getting the same thing on EUW too, been tearing my hair out trying to fix it thinking it's something on my end.

All other applications and other web pages still functional

Happens every game

Chicken Tendee10/13/2014, 2:21:20 AM1 votes

I've been having the same problem for the past few weeks. Its gotten to the point where I can't even play the game. I originally thought that it was my internet, so I switched to ethernet; however the problem is still occurring. Although it takes about 20 minutes to find a game on LAN and I don't have any friends over there, I might end up transferring my account over.

Vesarixx10/13/2014, 3:38:01 AM1 votes

What ISP are you with? there was a similar thing at the end of season 3, that had to do with a certain ISP, I've been getting this issue as well, but when I tested it at a local internet cafe the connection was completely fine, not one disconnect issue. Might also have to do with weather you are on wireless or hard wired but it seems more like a bandwidth thing.

Yfrappefort10/13/2014, 3:55:25 AM1 votes

It just keep getting worse and worse. Yesterday I played a game and I was at 144 MS...I had trouble to last hit. If this keeps up I'll just stop playing.

xs lilly10/13/2014, 5:13:54 AM1 votes

BUMP

ALSO, sometimes when the game starts, I am COMPLETELY unable to cast ANY abilities. When I click, nothing happens; I can't even RECALL.

THIS started happening recently. I have pretty much suffered from LAG all season, beginning mostly around the spring/summer time when the DDOS attacks were primarily happening. BUT NOW, I am constantly having to adjust my settings in-game because my FPS gets screwed up after EVERY patch. I have an ASUS Republic of Gamers PC, it SHOULD not be getting as low as 3FPS. It is so frustrating.

But the same things as you mentioned happens to me every day that I play league, usually the first 2 games then after a while it's more and more stable. My ping is normally ~70 and my FPS normally around 60-70...... Lately I'm lucky if my FPS will stay above 30, and my ping is constantly over 100, sometimes as high as 3000 for a few secs. Or it'll be normal, and as soon as a team fight occurs, I can't move or everything lags out! I KNOW it's not my internet, either.....

:/ I've had to lower my graphics settings in-game in hopes of fixing it but this hasn't really helped. Also, getting bugsplatted every day now too. I really would like to just be able to play the game. I hate that I have to "test" it with a couple normals before being able to do ranked. Like today, I lost a 4v5 (we had 5) because I was SO laggy that I died several times in team fights. I actually lost the 3 normals I played today and I DC/lagged on all 3. It is very frustrating but I don't think there is a game I enjoy more than LoL right now which is why I'm hoping for a fix.

:((((
