what is Malzahar's purpose now?

honestly i cant tell. the changes opt him to be more of a dot mage based around e and w. except his w keeps getting nerfed and his e isnt even aids anymore....its like a slight fever now. his laning phase is just about nearly unplayable at this point. i might as well keep him in jungle or turn him into a support cuz he is now more useful in a teamfight than he is 1v1. he feels more like a crappy support/seige character now except his minions are useless against enemies under tower which sucks because that's like his only sourse of real damage. the fact that one of malzahars counter play actually involves towers disgust me.

somebody explain to me please? because i know that he still counters champs like yasuo in lane but if im playing any mage mid im never gonna get a kill unless they do something stupid or my teammate ganks. so am i just some weird utility mage thats only prupose is to lockdown targets with r, and control zones around drag or baron? if a fight occurs near enemy tower im basically useless for dealing damage cuz its all loaded into voidlings.
