Why Ranked Matchmaking is flawed and a Suggestion

#Hello Summoners and Member Riots^^

Recently I thought about the ranked Matchmaking (not normal) and came to the conclusion that it is highly flawed.

> “Matchmaking is not affected by your league. You’ll compete against opponents of various skill levels, which are represented by a hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR). Your league placement indicates your progress against a set of opponents who are similar to you in skill level, but it doesn’t restrict competition solely to players in your league.”

In other Words: You will be matched against those who have a similar MMR like you, regardless of the league they or you are in.

#This leads to the following Problem:

To some Point it makes it more difficult for People to climb in Divisions and Leagues although they already “passed” the “Skillevel of that tier”: they need to perform harder than the league actually demands.

Example: _Player X is in the Silver league but has a MMR of a Platinum Player. Thus X will be matched against players with a similar MMR (Platinum) instead of Players of X’s League (Silver). This will make it for X much more difficult to climb in Divisons as X actually has to provide the performance of a Platinum Player to reach Gold rather than “only” the performance of a Gold Player. _

Thus the League System itself becomes a bit ineffective and senseless as it matches Players with the same MMR instead of the same League (People with very different MMR and performance level can be “stuck” in the same Division/League).

#How to fix that?

Quite simple: Players only get matched with other Players of their League (or like +/- 2 Divisions)

Example: A Silver Player with a Platinum-MMR ques up for a ranked. This Player will be matched against other Silver Players regardless of their MMR.

As the expected Skilllevel of all participating Players is Silver, Players who perform “better” than that will rise more easily as they already “passed” the “Skill-level” of that League and are ready to join a higher League.

What do you think? Are you happy with the current ranked Matchmaking?

Interesting idea but in order for that Silver player to get Platinum MMR they would have needed to consistently win a lot of games for their MMR to rise that high. This would have caused them to rise much higher than Silver. I think the reason why Riot uses a "secret" system is so people don't try to figure out ways to exploit it. I highly doubt that the current system allows a low ranked player to have a high MMR or a high ranked player to have a low MMR.

Do you have any examples from ranked games that show this disparity?

Currently if you win a game, your MMR rises, which also leads to stronger opponents. So while you are in a Division/League you can get far stronger opponents just by winning a bunch of matches in a row. As you are facing tougher matches you will more likely loose. And with tough I mean you will get opponents that are/can be quite beyond the MMR of your actual League so you have to perfrom better than "expected".

You will get more LP if you manage to beat Players out of your League, but your chances to win on the other hand are sinking much more.

Hope that helps

The system is actually not flawed. If your MMR is high you'll get high LP gains from wins and barely lose any LP on losses. This pulls you around fast so your rank catches up to your MMR relatively quickly.

This account I'm on is a smurf. http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/71599390 - It only took me a week to get within a tier of my main account ( my main is Diamond 4 ).

I've done this on multiple accounts, I always place in Gold and get to Platinum within 3-4 days of casual playing.

The ranked system isn't flawed - but the punishment system sure is.

But dont you think its kinda unfair if you have to perform better than you "need to" just because you get matched with the same MMR instead of the same league?

I know that you get more LP if your MMR is high and such but still I think the basic approach to match players based on their MMR is not "fair".

(Hope you get my point)

EDIT: Your chances to rank up are smaller (as you compete against players who possible playing "better" than your league) eventhough you are getting more LP.

There are no Bronze players in Diamond and no Diamond players in Bronze.
