League needs to take a hard look at AP bruiser itemization.

I've been playing a lot of AP bruisers lately, all the way from Vladimir, Mordekaiser and Sylas, to Fizz and while AD bruisers have always been a thing, there's a big hole in the wall it comes to itemization for AP bruisers, especially the manaless ones.

  1. First - These guys don't even have reliable starting items. So Vladimir and Mordekaiser used to go item 1054, which is a fucking stupid item on both. In face so stupid that both these guys benefit more off item 1056 instead. Doran's blade on the other hand is a far better item for most AD bruisers to start with, and gives them everything from HP to a significant amount of AD at the start of the match.

Manaless AP bruisers need an item better than Doran's ring, without the mana regen feature, but more HP.

  1. The AP items don't give nearly as much HP as their AD counterparts. Let's face it. AD champions have way better tank/juggernaut items. There's no equivalent of item 3053 or item 3071 for AP bruisers who want to stack HP and AP simultaneously onto their champions. While items such as Morello, Liandry's, and Rylai's are the best substitute, item 3152 is the only optimal first item which rewards most AP juggernaut/divers with the stats they'd need, namely a significant amount of HP, AP, CDR, and a very useful passive.

What with CDR being available on pretty much every class of item, Tanks and AP juggernauts have it the most difficult when it comes to even hitting 30% without having to sacrifice building extra bulk.

  1. AP itemization is too geared towards burst damage. Notably mages and AP assassin items.

With the exception of item 3151, none of the AP items incentivize long trades and consistent damage.

One of the most broken items in Zhonya's has an active which is better suited to assassin and mages allowing them to blink out of combat temporarily. Bruisers on the other hand want to stay in battle for as long as possible, allowing them to duel the opponents as they blow their spells.

Literally no AP item other than item 3151 and perhaps item 3116 awards the user for staying in combat but instead rewards with methods of escapes (item 3152, item 3157).

This effect can especially be seen in champions such as Diana and Ekko who do better in shorter trades over full blown skirmishers despite having been designed as skirmisher/diver due to said items promoting an assassin/burst playstyle.

Tl;DR : AP bruisers, especially the mana-less ones require items to give out more tankiness, and rewards the user for staying in combat. Atop that, it's very difficult to build CDR on such champs without having to sacrifice HP.

AP Bruisers have no item 3053, item 3071, or item 3078 to powerspike on, with item 3152 being the only rounded starting item which gives out damage, HP, and CDR to provide a significant powerspike.

AP items other than item 3151 are geared shorter trades, and hardly any AP item make extended trades stronger.

Wasn't morde broken on release because of ap items....? His core items being disgustingly cheap.

His numbers weren't even that high, his on release numbers were much lower than that of darius.

I'd be onboard with improving this. Give me some AP Sejuani quality time.

Typical Bruiser first items would be Black Cleaver or more commonly Trinity Force.

One costs 3000 gold the other 3733.

Protobelt costs 2500g. So typically an AP Bruiser or Mage gets back to lane with a completed item on their second back while an AD gets their first full item on their third back.

Every single one of the Champs you listed are already doing extremely well.

They either have massive amounts of sustain in their kits like Vlad who also becomes immune to damage as a defensive move or Mordekaiser, or Sylas' massive heals. And Fizz is incredibly mobile and can become immune to damage for short times.

The problem with AP itemization is that it's shared with Mages. If Mages get any more HP than they already get, they just become ranged assasin/juggernauts.

Vlad mage, fizz assassin. The only ap bruisers are Sylas and Mordekaiser maybe Swain .

There are other classes that need it more like on hit.

I think abyssal Mask needs a big revamp.

Remove the mana completely for more HP or for Armor. Make it the bread and butter for AP oriented tankier champions and make it convert 5-10% of done magic damage to true damage like conqueror. Reduce it's range a little more obviously and make it only affect the user.
