New Mordekaiser is fun!

Just played my first game with the new master of metal and boy oh boy he's actually pretty fun.

I tried Mordekaiser around two weeks after I started playing League in S4 and even though I liked his character his skills felt kind of awkward to me. However, when he hit the PBE with his new kit I started seeing a lot of posts condemning the changes, most of all his inability to solo lane.

So I bought him immediately to see what the fuzz was all about. And so I played a team builder match with one of my friends as Leona to try out bot lane Morde. We were matched up versus a Sivir and a Sona. I was kind of scared at first thinking I was just going to feed Sivir whom is an extremely snowbally champ. However the moment Sivir started poking us, me and my friend charged in and wrecked both of them with the new W.

Even better, once I built item 3044 Sivir couldn't even kite me anymore. Long story short we won at 20 minutes once the enemy team saw me charging into midlane with 8 kills and goddamn dragon! The best thing was that I had fun the whole time charging into battle with my support.

Its really nice to have a break from the old meta and try out new stuff.

I don't think CertainlyT deserved all that hate, he did a pretty good job.

I encourage you guys to play the new Mordekaiser . All the uproar and "how dare they!" in the boards seemed kind of exaggerated in retrospective. He still maintains his old identity even down in the botlane.

Mordekaiser is the type of champion that has a small loyal group of players. Obviously changing his kit and role would cause such a huge uproar from a really vocal minority (when I say this I mean the boards themselves, we're a microcosm when compared to the actual playerbase.). Hell every time someone said to quit harassing CertainlyT in the Mordekaiser rework post they got downvoted to hell. (This is why I check every comment within a threshold, just in case the guy actually just stated an honest and polite yet unpopular opinion.). So to ye olde S1 Mordekaiser mains I tell you to try out the new Mordekaiser and tell me what you think!

To finish off here are a few tips I found on the web (and just tested for myself) if you guys want to try out the new master of metal. Kind of like a TL;DR.

  1. Go with a support who can charge into the fight with you like Leona Braum TahmKench Alistar etc. I wouldn't recommend any of the utility supports Janna Nami Soraka . Mordekaiser has plenty of sustain in lane. Also make sure your team has at least 1 champion that deals Physical damage, though 2 are optimal.

  2. Check out the new recommended items, don't build Morde full AP as you usually would for mid lane. Do not skip the item 3302 , its pretty important. Also, his rework gave him a pretty good buff when it comes to damage so get items that allow you to stick to your target and avoid being kited item 3044 item 3116 .

  3. Last of all do NOT max your E first. Go RWQE, trust me on this.

I absolutely love the new GP, his barrels actually add a nice amount of harass and damage to his kit. And the attention he got in burning tides was top notch!

Full commentary:

Passive: to me, Mord's shield bar has always been a huge part of his identity. Unlike other Mord players, I would be building him tanky, while everyone else used straight burst mage. I think the new passive is great, in that it scales with health, but they also nerfed his base health, to compensate. He seems to scale really well with purchased health, but the base health drop makes him very reliant on the defensive items, i think.

Finally, it feels like Morde has more time with no abilities available than he used to. this is probably because of the shield running out faster than it used to (because less damage is converted into a shield), and so you have to start worrying sooner about another ability to use to re-fill it.

Q: both satisfying and disappointing. landing that 3rd hit is huge, and very very fun, but it feels like it doesn't really proc the passive at all. also encourages you to take flash, which I would not necessarily do before.

W: If there's anything I hate about the update here, it's the W. The fact that it is not self targetable completely forces Mord out of taking a solo lane. It used to be that he could thrive in any of the 3 major lanes (not so much in the jungle), but now he can't survive nearly as well on his own. this would bother me much less if it didn't extend so much into late game. being FORCED to walk hand in hand with your support, all game long, is annoying.---> say goodbye to split pusher Mordekaiser.

E: Mostly the same. What's up with the AD ratio though? that doesn't make sense.

R: Awesome, as usual. Dragons? Awesome. Level Scaling duration? That's a real gem there.

Overall: Mordekaiser is still Mordekaiser. Identity issues? No: those newfound attachment issues with the support are annoying though. Mordekaiser has lower base stats than he used to, but higher scaling.

Like I said I build Phage and Rylais so landing the third Q is not that hard. What was really important during the laning phase is commitment. With Adcs obviously outranging you, you need to know when to back off and when to go all in. If you can do this then you can shut down the adc and deny him his late game. Here is where the W came in. The moment I cast it my support knew I was about to engage. Just stick to your target, pop your ult to survive long enough till you hit the third Q and you'll be golden. Also the AD scaling on the E is great for farming.

He actually works fine in sololane. Most melee toplaners cant trade with him because of his shield(and E gives Morde some huge amounts of it) and Q. Leveling Q-E-Q-W(for that jungler ganks or if you want to roam with TP)-Q-R and its usually kill at lvl6 if not earlier.

He is WAY better in solo lanes than bot. A complete failure by Riot on what they wanted to do.

I really like the new Mordekaiser as well. I've found that he really needs a support that can cover for his immobility early game with cc and slows and have had very good games with Blitzcrank and Sion supports.

For the first 3-4 games.

Then you realize that all you are doing is waiting for enemies to be in range for your 3rd Q.
