I don't get to play a whole lot, but want to stay fairly relevant, so i'm going to play top lane tanks mainly.
seems like he's always decent and make it into LCS every year. any tips for play maokai or any other tanks i should look into? Support would probably be my secondary role because i suck at jungle.
Nanuk Pihoqahiak1 votesAbsolutely utilize his passive. If you're going to do ANYTHING playing Maokai, you use that passive at every opportunity. It's why is laning is so good along with Grasp. He also has absurdly high base damage on his Q in addition to the mana cost being a static 40.

LongHair Fox1 votesGrasp is good but the extra 5% cooldown reduction in the utility tree also means a lot. Unofrtunately the best keystone then is thunderlords, which is worse ovreall although it is easy to proc.
Other than that learn to read the enemy team for which items you need and which targets you need to disrupt. Maokai is one of the tankiest champions in the game by use of his q cc, w eyeframe and ult, this means that standing on top of the enemy lucian can sometimes be the right choice and other times it is peeling away the yasuo from your own adc.
