  1. Be scared. You don't deal significant damage, and you're really squishy. You die very easily and if you get CC'd once in a team fight, you're probably dead.

  2. Be aggressive. If you are with your ADC, use them as a frontline, but don't be afraid to get closer and land Q's. Once you've whittled your opponent's health bars down, you can get a good silence to prevent flashing out and follow up for the kill.

  3. Positioning. Always be as far away from the fight as possible while being close enough to heal priority targets. After Ardent Censer and Mikaels came in, I typically grab Swiftness boots to reposition since I get 40% from the rest of my build.

  4. Watch the map. Soraka's ultimate has the fastest response time and longest range(infinite) of any global ultimate; every other one requires 2-3 seconds of windup and warning. Hold your ultimate for when it will make a difference, but always be watching for opportunities to tilt a critical mid/top lane fight in your team's favor.

  5. Choose who lives and who dies. Determine the priority order for the fight, and adjust based on the situation. I've won many fights simply because the enemy team just couldn't kill my ADC or an Azir. Heal often, it's a low CD, but heal the right people.

You press W to heal your adc and laugh at the enemy team because they think ''executioners calling'' is going to stop you from carrying

You need to know more than just Soraka. She is too popular to expect to get her when you are stuck with Support. Sona and Janna are similar alternatives.

Surprised you didn't include Nami. Granted she's more skillshot oriented, but definitely one of the main healers in the game.

Nami honestly isn't the best support to rely on. Her heals aren't that strong, her skillshots are unreliable, her damage is undertuned, like whenever you see a nami on your team all you can ask the player is "why nami?"

She's way too squishy and punishable compared to say, a sona, raka, janna, bard, etc which all do pretty much the same thing but better. Plus unlike them, nami has a tenacy to randomly fall in and out of the meta with simple changes, she's not consistently strong or weak.

She kinda needs a sona/leona scale change tbh.

She isn't as simple as the other two, which may be an important factor if they are asking how to play the easiest champion in the game.

Fair enough.
