I have a sincere question about the item shop

why is there no magic penetration based item with attack damage stats?

there are pure attack damage based champions that deal magic based damage, yet their damage cannot penetrate due to there not being any items for these champions to buy. two examples that come to mind are kindred and kayn.

one COULD argue that buying wits end can help, but the reality of it is that wits end does not help. at best you can buy sorcerers boots and somewhat deal magic damage to champions if they havent built a lot of magic resist. to that end using abilities that deal magic damage on pure attack damage champions leaves little use except for when paired with champions who can reduce magic resist like morgana or against minions.

then there are a large quantity of champions that have both attack damage and ability power numbers in their kits and deal both physical and magical damage. tristana kayle akali and katarina come to mind.

can we have a %magic penetration version of last whisper or something?

Hybrid champs arent meant to use flat pen.

there are zero options for hybrid champs with pure AD scaling to get % penetration for magic damage though. in the ferocity tree you have to commit to either percent physical or percent magical. in the cunning tree you can only get flat magic penetration and lethality and then have to commit to a cunning keystone.

Thats kind of the point. You either go ENTIRELY AP or ENTIRELY AD on every single one of the champions you listed as examples. The magic damage on an AD champion is to make it harder to itemize against. Not many AP champions do phys damage though.

then why bother making champions with worthless magic damage?

This is a very good point. Corki builds item 3020 and item 3135 as his core build. But he actually has some AP scaling, so it's a valid buy. There are now some champs not so lucky. And I can see how in some specific niche situations you would want to buy it without the AP being such a waste. Especially now that some runes will provide AD or AP depending on what you already bought.

Dual pen runes and Cunning mastery come to mind, for now. But that only covers the basics.

yeah, but cunning's precision requires a cunning keystone commitment. sometimes that's just not an option. flat penetration from sorcerers boots is wasted on a champion that deals mostly physical damage since there's nowhere to go from there. with void staff corki gets % penetration and can ALWAYS deal the same damage when dealing magic damage, but as you've said he has AP scalings.

with runes being reworked it leaves little room for these unique champions to get their penetration without destroying their builds.
