There are overloaded champions... and then there's Ekko

I genuinely feel like something needs to be taken from Ekko's kit. He feels like those duo-form champions but only with one form - every ability has two abilities tacked on themselves.

Why does his Q slow, when it's spammable with such a low CD and mana cost?

Ekko's Q: 50/60/70/80/90 mana - two of them clear the whole wave - and at the point when it costs 70 he already has item 3802 . He pays nothing for being a melee midlaner. To comparison, Diana's Q costs 55 mana - and with it's damage and based on how creeps aggro works you are able to take maybe 2 creeps with 1 Q if you're lucky.

At least it applies a Moonlight debuff, so she can dash to a target two times - oh wait, Ekko can do that since 1st level if he decides so, usually since the 2nd! Did I mention the other one is a blink? And that it applies on-hit effects and thus with item 3100 and item 3145 it deals at least triple the Diana's double-R damage? And that he doesn't need a target for the first jump so he can use it as an escape?

Yeah well guess what, now hitting Q as Diana feels like a burden, like a limit. But Plant, thanks to Diana's Q having 6 second CD maxed out makes it so she can dash every 6 seconds not counting CDR! You are right, that makes it so much better now that we know Ekko's E has 7 seconds CD maxed out!

Ok, at least I guess the rest of his kit is ok - OH WAIT, what about his W? One would think having an AoE slow would be normal for assassin. One would think shield is a necessary survivability - wait it STUNS too?! Let's jump back to Diana and he laughable E "CC" at 70 manacost AT ALL RANKS, while this ability of Ekko costs 70 at max rank - thus making it 50 for the majority of the game as he maxes it as the last spell.

But Plant, it's way harder to land! That's true, my friend, that's the only thing that is good about that spell, because zoning is a nonfactor in this game - that's why his Q and ult are also alright in that sense!

Oh right, his ult... Because if he can farm safely just throwing Qs and has an escape on his E (unlike the most similar champion here playstyle-wise, Diana), he also needs an untargetability, heal, and ANOTHER blink! He is literally impossible to kill in lane unless the player is braindead. But Plant, why would you need to kill him there? Um, I thought that's the phase you need the assassins to get behind, right? No, Plant, not giving him kills is enough! You are right, let's then rely on my botlane that they back up when you ping and follow him - which is a GREAT idea because you know where he is everytime thanks to his ult ghost - IF it only was VISIBLE when you don't see him!

Anyway

We removed Azir's knockup on his E becuase he was overloaded. Why let a kit that is everything Orianna, Diana and Zed combined have intact? Doesn't sound fair to me.

Well they should nerf Ori first, if they do that I can understand Ekko nerfs.

And A Real Hiero1 votes

Why not both?

Inting Pillow1 votes

Ori is a bigger problem. It would be unfair to nerf Ekko when there are champions much more deserving. If Riot stops showing favoritism to Ori because she is a popular LCS pick then they can go ahead and nerf Ekko.

He pays nothing for being a melee midlaner.

i didn't realize you had to 'pay' for being melee

An Undead brat1 votes

Yes, being melee is the pay, that's why we have melee champions.

Problem is Ekko's designed as him being melee was a weakness so he got stuffed incredible amount of shit into his kit, but it is that much that is is irrelevant - or do you think it's fair for him being this way and having everyone else who is melee suffer in the laning phase?

Big Lincoln2 votes

everyone else? ekko gets wrecked by bruisers

An Undead brat1 votes

I was comparing melee to ranged champions matchups, but as I said: if Ekko gets shit on, he's braindead, all you need to do is standing under turret and throw Qs, no risk.

Big Lincoln2 votes

it's bad that a melee can farm in a ranged matchup?

An Undead brat1 votes

As an assassin with no other virtual weakness? Yes.

Junkο1 votes

So just like every ranged champion in the game except they don't have to use spells because they have ranged AAs?

An Undead brat1 votes

Ranged champions are designed with this advantage in mind.

I feel like this is more of a diana is too weak thread in disguise rather than an ekko is too overloaded thread. ekko is fine now, his tank build is gone and he's squishy enough to peel away from if you have a half decent team, his only escape is his ultimate, which is a very good escape maybe the best in the game i'll give you that, but it's an ultimate. Q is telegraphed, his W is one of the longest deleyed spells in the game, his E can be annoying but every champ has an annoying part in his kit. He's fine, diana isnt the bench mark for melee assassins in the midlane in terms of balance...

An Undead brat5 votes

No, I think Diana is heathy designed champion with clear weaknesses and abnormal strengths. But Ekko's just bullshit.

Junkο4 votes

I'm pretty sure melee champions are supposed to have MORE stuff than ranged champions instead of having to "pay" for being melee, cause you know they have less range?

Lauchmelder2 votes

Getting more is fine. Getting pretty much everything is not

Junkο2 votes

He doesn't have everything tho? Hell compare him to other champions with similar abilities and you see his abilities are actually fairly weak in comparison.

Brand literally has his passive on steroids. It deals damage before hitting all 3 stacks, and hitting 3 stacks blows up a huge AoE, which can cause a chain reaction of tons of max health damage. Meanwhile Ekko has to get in your face to try to deal small burst of single target damage.

Ahri's Q is way faster and deals true damage, it also gives Ahri a big burst of movement speed, and is spammable like Ekko's Q.

Veigar E is faster than Ekko's W and stops people from getting out minus blinks, while Ekko's takes so godamn long to activate while having a huge warning it's basically your fault for getting hit by it.

Ekko's E is just another dash/blink AA spell that procs on hit effects, like Fizz, or what Akali past level 6 can do on steroids, or what Katarina can do constantly if she picks up daggers, etc.

And his ult is just a screw this I'm out of here spell, yeah it deals massive damage but it isn't worth using it for damage. And while it probably is one of the more useful abilities of this kind, it's still not that good as a whole.

Brand literally has his passive on steroids.

Except Brand's AAs don't proc it and he has two crucial skillshots to land.

Ahri's Q is way faster and deals true damage, it also gives Ahri a big burst of movement speed, and is spammable like Ekko's Q.

Ahri's kit does way less things, that's like comparing Ekko to Poppy because her Q hits twice.

Veigar E is faster than Ekko's W and stops people from getting out minus blinks, while Ekko's takes so godamn long to activate while having a huge warning it's basically your fault for getting hit by it.

Veigar is an immobile mage without an escape and the Event horizon is literally the best non-ultimate CC ability in the game, what if we rather compared it so something more common?

Ekko's E is just another dash/blink AA spell that procs on hit effects, like Fizz, or what Akali past level 6 can do on steroids, or what Katarina can do constantly if she picks up daggers, etc.

It's amusing how you just compared Ekko to the whole roster - mobile mages, immobile AoE mages, assassins - calling it equal but at the same time you are saying he's fine. That's funny.

but it isn't worth using it for damage

Right here, that's it. How come he's allowed to do it this way when in spotlight Phreak says he "sacrifices a big chunk of damage"? He does not sacrifice anything.

Junkο1 votes

Except Brand's AAs don't proc it and he has two crucial skillshots to land.

2 of Brand's abilities are targeted, other is an AoE that is really hard to miss. All of this he can do from range. Ekko has 2 abilities that can proc passive and the rest is all in AAs, which are melee.

Ahri's kit does way less things, that's like comparing Ekko to Poppy because her Q hits twice.

No? They are literally the same. Ekko uses Q to clear and harass, Ahri uses Q to clear and harass. Both are AP assassins that use their mobility spells to get uncomfortably close to their target to kill them. Both have a really safe ultimate that can also be used for damage.

What does Ekko do that Ahri doesn't? Please tell me.

Veigar is an immobile mage without an escape and the Event horizon is literally the best non-ultimate CC ability in the game, what if we rather compared it so something more common?

Compare it to what exactly? There is no other ability like this in the game.

It's amusing how you just compared Ekko to the whole roster - mobile mages, immobile AoE mages, assassins - calling it equal but at the same time you are saying he's fine. That's funny.

You know what's funny? You lost 1 game to Ekko where your team got 4 kills vs 33 from the enemy team, and decided to take it as a good indicator of a balance of a champion, and you played an unviable mid champion on top of that. The Ekko was almost 2 tiers above you too, which means he is a way better player than you.

An Undead brat1 votes

One of those targeted spells is his ultimate, nice comparison to an AA. And Brand's W is not hard to dodge, lol, Just watch Brand, he's so predictable.

Let's see, what Ahri doesn't have? Besides of Ekko's 2 slows, AoE stun, untargetability, blinks instead of dashes, mobility outside of his ultimate, WAY lower mana costs and enough damage to oneshot someone without his ult damage - yeah, that's not so much he has over her, right? Don't get confused, Ahri's still VERY good and I hate her, but nothing in Ekko's overload levels.

Compared to any CC on basic ability.

These were my pinions BEFORE that game, it's irrelevant.

Junkο1 votes

But you still went to rant on the forums right after losing to Ekko. Have you considered that you are just tilted? Ekko wasn't even doing good that game, both Fiora and Xayah got fed way more, and your team was full off morons (and apparently an inter too) so if you lost that game you would have just complained anyway Ekko or not.

Ekko isn't overloaded, he isn't even strong right now. There isn't a reason you would want Ekko right now over Fizz or ironically, Ahri (she has twice the pickrate and a better winrate at all points, even though you think Ekko is overloaded and better than Ahri).

An Undead brat1 votes

I did not lose because of Ekko. Ekko was our team's least problem in that game.

Lauchmelder2 votes

Brand doesn't have a slow, a stun, mobility, a shield, a "screw this I'm out of here" button etc.

It's not that Ekko deals a shitton of damage, it's that he literally has everything.

BerylCrab2 votes

I have to agree, I've played against ekko players who are so bad that they land NONE of their abilities on me, and kill me using his unavoidable dash thing only. Which is what should be changed. (clearly)

Emerald Fang2 votes

His passive needs to do WAY less damage. Getting 3 hits shouldn't be rewarded as much; it's really not difficult to do when your Q slows and your dash has such a low cooldown. Otherwise his kit is fine.

King of Demons1 votes

Azir knockup was removed for a different reason. Why should a champion that can very well chunk or kill you from 1000 range also have the possibility to essentially stunlock you while doing so? It removed counterplay entirely other than not being inside of his range and you can figure out yourself why that is a bad idea. Ekko always has to go in himself and even his ult isn't enough to guarantee that he will get out

An Undead brat1 votes

even his ult isn't enough to guarantee that he will get out

False. As I said, uless he's brainless.

And are you trying to tell me Azir (now focus) would kill you from 1000 range, while also knocking you up with his E?

Power Cosmic1 votes

When built damage he is pretty str8 forward E/Q or Q/E machine w/ an escape ult. When he was able to use his whole kit to make plays, he was the most enjoyable champ in the game. It was far better than having auto attackers steamrolling and supports controlling everything.

Ninjas Flossing1 votes

3 things

  1. diana and ekko do two drastically different things despite being "melee mid assassins"
  2. while ekko has a lot of tools in his kit they ALL have visible and delayed effects that easily give at least a full second for counterplay/avoidance and for the most part all have to land to get the full effect
  3. tools do not make power

nerf Ekko
