Well this explains a lot

Patch 5.19 notes

Fixed a bug where Judgment was dealing damage to the Villain equal to 1% of Garen’s Health rather than the Villain’s

This honestly explains a lot of things.

Was it all the time or only triggering in some situations? Because that is very relevant to his winrate then.

Verxint41 votes

I'm inclined to think it was all the time. I had times as a squishy when I was the villan where I felt like Garen was doing buttloads of damage. I figured it was just me being squishy but this makes more sense tbh.

Nunya Bezwacks1 votes

most of that was probably due to the 11 spins doing 100 damage each thing on top of the true damage + the 500 damage from his q + the true damage from that and a true damage ult.

TeslaSpecter6 votes

haha thats not a bug thats some developer not understanding what the boss was wanting xD anywa this will be interesting to see his winrate after this..

When the tooltip says one thing And the ability does another That's not miscommunication It's a bug.

TeslaSpecter1 votes

People who code and the people who do tool tips are at least two separate people... Do you think one guy is in charge of coding designing drawing and typing everything that we see on the screen? XD

Delioth5 votes

... It could very easily and efficiently be a formatted (html) string attached to the object for the ability- in which case it's most definitely the same guy doing those two things; why would you A) hire a guy just to do that typing, then B) make him figure out how to read the code well enough to type in the string without introducing several bugs into the code, then C) also teach him how to do the fancy string stuff that lets you adjust the string on the fly with stat changes and ability level-ups?

That seems like way more work than just having the programmer do that.

TurtleOSP3 votes

I'm pretty sure all tool tips are stored in a database and the game calls onto that database for the string that is the tooltip. So, the person writing the tool tip wouldn't be touching the code at all.

RISE Shlack1233 votes

No, it's a bug. No matter how you try to slice it up, it's a bug, whether a bug via breakdown in communication or a bug in actual coding. Both are considered bugs since they aren't working as Riot, as a company, intended.

TeslaSpecter1 votes

it is a bug defiantly

Judgment is his E, not his R.

Honestly, it probably won't have that big of an impact. Assuming Garen had 3k hp and his target had 2k, his judgment was, in effect, dealing 15 of his target's max health as true damage instead of 10%. It's really only that noticeable vs targets who have a huge hp disparity with him since building straight hp isn't exactly a good idea in most situations (all hinges on how much mileage you get out of Warmog's passive).

If anything, it might make his winrate as a function of game time even out as opposed to making his actual winrate plummet.

RisenDarkKnight2 votes

Except those numbers make no sense. By the time enemy squishies get 2k health if they do at all, garen will have at leastk 4k hp if not 5k. Most garen players build hp heavy builds with dead mans plate, black cleaver, a 3 other items that give at least 400 hp and boots. Rarely, they might build thornmail or ghostblade, but usually it's straight hp/resistances.

The Ecdysiast2 votes

Yeah. This other guy seems to think Garen's building no items ever.

Squidblimp1 votes

This explain why the Garen that only built HP items was killing me in about 2 seconds...

Catastrop1 votes

Still, that kind of damage coming out consistently can easily rack up to 3000-5000 True damage over the course of a game. Especially since Garen is going to build at least 3 high HP items.

Hellioning1 votes

It's max health, not current health anyway.

AMYS GRAVE3 votes

It will be interesting to see how this changes his win/pick rates...

ducking fizz1 votes

Not sure if his pick rate will change that dramatically, because most people probably didn't even now this "bug" existed.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I sure didn't...

Riot's expert game coding at its finest.

Of course, we're all thinking in the back of our minds that they did this intentionally without telling us. Again.

Mistakes happen.

Sona used to have a bug where her W reductions displayed number wise but wasn't actually reducing it.

Bugs happen in coding.

Pika3101 votes

They happen far too often and far too specifically for most of these "bugs" to be mere coincidence. Sure, I can give them the benefit of doubt in some cases, but ones like these are far too suspicious for me to not believe somebody on the "Balance" Team decided to abuse their power.

Tis a nice day7 votes

As someone who has on several occasions tried coding for 20 hours straight (deadlines + red bull), it is very easy to make coding mistakes when you are not in the best state of mind. Even 2-3 hours without a solid rest will cause you to do weird things now and then.

RISE Shlack1235 votes

As a coder, you also realize that everything you code is tested before release. Sure, some minor bugs will always make it through, but this Garen bug should have been easily seen and removed assuming they actually used their test servers properly.

I also code - I know. This bug isn't excusable. And they can't blame "spaghetti" code - that's their own fault to begin with.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

RISE Shlack1232 votes

Clearly whatever coding you've done or whoever you've worked for had low standards.

Pika3101 votes

I can understand where that reasoning would come from, but at the same time I can assure this is not an issue at Riot Game. Employees have openly stated they rarely do any actual work in an average day. Half of work hours are spent playing Ranked or Aram, the rest is used watching pro games and other miscellaneous activities. Apparently, most of the coding is done in small portions, usually during lunch beak taking no more than 10 or 15 minutes, including writing a mentioning in the patch notes for the next patch.

After hearing admissions like these, it began making greater sense to me why it seems like nothing ever gets done in a timely manner, if at all.

You don't get how tricky coding can be.

PBE also might not catch this, shit happens.

RISE Shlack1232 votes

Then what do they use the PBE and play-testing teams for? We all know mistakes happen, which is why MOST game/programming companies actually USE their testing environments before going live. Riot uses live servers to test.

Mistakes happen. But this isn't excusable. Sorry.

MarhsallLee671 votes

So that they can say "Wow, how did this bug get through? PBE must have not seen it" or "Wow, how did this broken champion hit live? PBE must have not communicated with us very well" when shit goes wrong? At this point, PBE feels more like it's there to give some players the illusion of having an impact on what changes hit live.

I personally don't have PBE access, but every tester I've met has said that it feels like Riot listens to almost none, if any, of the feedback they give.

RISE Shlack1231 votes

That's pretty much my point.

I will be so happy if this drops him out of the "OP must perma ban" section of champs. Not cause I want to play him, he's boring as hell, right next to Riven on the boring list, but cause It's kind of tiring seeing some scrub who got rekt in lane cause he ranked up using the broken champs and still losses lane with those champs then turn on a squishy carry who's the villain and hit 2 freakin buttons and 100-0 them before the silence is even up.... maybe a third point and click ability to destroy half their health pool if he somehow screws up the other two abilities.....

Yeah its kind of unfair to have a tank that can do an assassin's job without having to worry about positioning or damage or skill. I think Riot really screwed up on the whole tank buffing thing. Skarner is so unbalanced right now its retarted, Garen is just as tanky as I remember only now he has tons of dmg and for some reason seems faster, Darius... wtf was up with that like oh Darius doesn't do enough dmg, we need to give him more bonus dmg and a heal, just about the only thing they got right was Mord who honestly deserved a pet dragon.

Vicarious1171 votes

Well Skarner was hella nerfed three times since the juggernaut patch, I honestly don't think he's even worth a ban. Still a strong pick, but I don't bother banning him anymore.

And yeah wtf was up with that initial Darius buff as well? Like he was released, was stupidly strong right off the bat and already deserved a perma ban, and then they BUFF HIM!? Like..... wut?

But dude... duuuuude.... Morde is the most broken of them ALL! His solo laning was destroyed and is horrendous, yeah but so what when you can 100-0 any adc and half the supports in the game while sustaining yourself on top of his ridiculous lane dominance with any kind of support next to him. Then ofc if he gets a drag, bot lane is over for the enemy adc, there is literally nothing that can be done when Morde sends it after the enemy adc, it WILL kill them if they stay and just the adc and support, even with the tower, won't kill it fast enough, it usually times out first.

And we can't forget Fiora just reworked as well! I mean yeah sure she's not as ridiculous as the old Fiora, with an ult that makes her untargettable, half hits your entire team, all while she STILL gets all her life steal! Was literally the absolute dumbest, poorly thought out, and bronze friendly as fuck ultimate in the game. But now... that heal on top of all the true damage and her ability to reset her AAs multiple times..... sure she's less noob friendly but she's obviously broken as fuck!

Meh, I mean, I haven't seen Fiora destroying as much as usual lately anymore. As for Mord... well i guess I've only sen bad players using him xD because he hasn't seemed that op.

Vicarious1171 votes

Yeah he really is, and just to back up my point he's 100% pick-ban in Worlds atm, and both times he made it through bans he's just wreck-rolled over the other team.

And you prob haven't seen her destroying cause she's perma banned atm due to how ridiculous she is lol

Aezanthya3 votes

What I love about this bug is the fact that Riot did not disable Garen until it was fixed.

L.o.L.

Gati2 votes

Yay now he won't do more dmg than an adc with only 2 dmg items

MrWasjig2 votes

This just goes to show how rushed these changes were for a bug THAT BIG to get through. But that might just be my cynicism getting the better of me again.

TheI3igDaddy2 votes

How is this a bug?

Really?

This seems to me that some programmer wasn't fucking paying attention when he was coding Garen's damage.

And now the cynical side of me thinks it was intentional to get people playing Garen again ._.

BakedLotion1 votes

Doesn't even matter. He's only broken because of true dmg ult. His E spin with every tick hitting will only do like 7% max hp

The Ecdysiast33 votes

Okay, so say you're Ashe. You have 1900 HP. That's 19 damage with every tick. (What' it's supposed to be)

The enemy is Garen. He has 5000 HP. That's 50 damage every tick. More than double what it was supposed to be.

Nunya Bezwacks2 votes

thats actually nearly 3x what its suppose to do.

Meep Man1 votes

This bug, on the average Garen against the average squishy, increased the ult passive damage by around 100-150% or more.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

So will this mean that Garen will have some of his nerfs reverted?

Celeste Benal1 votes

lmfao. That does explain a lot.

EyesOfTheFox1 votes

Sad part is that Worlds is being played on Patch 5.18, so that bug will still be in there. Let's see which teams will take advantage of that.

Sir Fuzzi1 votes

Heyyyyyy, Garen... what's happening?

I hear we've got some problems with your KDA reports... did you get the memo?
