"Runes Reforged lets you create whole new playstyles" - Riot video

Verxint··110 votes·9,472 views

"Play Evelynn as a snowballing ganker" "Play Nasus as a farming splitpusher" "Play Gnar as a kiting lane bully" "Play TF as a roamer" "Play Bard as a support" [zombie-brand-clap]

(Note: I'm excited about the rune changes but couldn't Riot have tried a little harder with these videos?)

The end idea might be the same, but you have different paths you can choose to get there. The videos would've been much better if they showed 2 builds per video demonstrating how people can have choices on how to play champions now.

Verxint15 votes

My point still stands, they could have put more effort in. Also, there are options that genuinely change a lot about how a champion works. My friend has a specific setup he's been using on Tahm Kench on the PBE that makes him able to go almost 700 movespeed when he eats someone using ghost. I've seen him eat people halfway down the lane and spit them out behind his tower. That's the type of thing these videos should be showcasing.

nm10104 votes

Yeah I agree, for how cool the new runes are they made a pretty boring series of videos.

Xonra2 votes

The videos were fine. You are just being whiny here. Sure they could have had "more", but they could have done nothing. Some of you kids are just always going to complain.

nm10107 votes

It isn't about more or less. They missed the point of their own video, which makes it boring. If they had just shown something cool like the slow resist Tahm Kench mentioned above it would've caught people's attention. Instead we got TF with a 10-20 second lower cd ult and a burst of movespeed WOWZERS that really gets my creative juices flowing.

Shoot the builds they showed didn't even have to be optimal (Predator TF for early gold card cheese ganks, dark harvest Nasus for 1 shot potential), just showcase the fact that champions can have diverse playstyles now.

Not specificly adcs, more like just ranged auto attackers in general

why not ranged as a whole?? Because a lot of mages dont seem to use the new runes as well as ad champs do. But all in all ranged champs again won the power battle. Just look at Riots video. "Gnar gets the dueling potential of frozen mallet without the huge investment." WTF

Dangerous game buffed from 5% to 15%. Not okay.

Ryusaether1 votes

Literally ANYONE can use that mastery, there are many other real issues.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Care to name a few? And explain why you think anyone would be good without any of the other options?

Ryusaether1 votes

Battle mages, tanks, juggernauts, frontline supports, even assassins, other than adcs.

I would say it's even better on juggernauts because they have plenty more hp to recover and squishies usually get bursted and probably can't even profit from that most of the times (sure in certain clean-up situations can mean the difference but it's situational, almost for everyone)

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Yeah, but I wanted an explanation of why they can afford to bring that instead of one of the other options.

Hi guys,

Our goal for these videos was to show potentially non-standard builds for champions that could achieve each champions specific "dream scenario." They were not necessarily trying for something they wouldn't as a champion conceptually try to do.

For some champions (Eve), the builds may end up being an optimal build (we aren't totally sure). For other champions we picked builds that most people wouldn't think of (Tank Bard, Phase Rush Nasus), but could still be viable.

So while I agree these are not "wacky" builds, they show a variety of gameplay options that is just the tip of the iceberg of whats possible this Preseason.

But.... nasus WOULD usually take stormraider's surge before, it's really not that different.

And bard is sometimes build tanky. He's got the stockier model that usually indicates champs meant to be built tanky

MetalGearTeemo4 votes

I build him tanky because I tend to play super aggressively and set up double binds and fights using ult into bind, and generally you want a chin to have a shot at surviving the resulting clustertruck

SzGamer2271 votes

That's the funny thing about Nasus. People took Stormraiders on Nasus because they wanted the 5% CDR mastery, not necessarily because Stormraiders was the optimal keystone for him. Having early CDR and a 45% CDR cap are extremely important on Nasus, so you couldn't afford taking Grasp for lane sustain and less disadvantageous trades because it hindered his ability to Q stack into late game.

Phase Rush might still be dominant on Nasus because that's where the delayed 10% CDR rune is, but I personally am looking forward to trying out Arcane Comet Nasus and harassing my lane opponent with Wither. XD

Arcane Comet need damage to be procc'd

But you could already do that with the old system, you could do wayyyyy more with the old system.

This really makes me feel like Riot is completely out of touch with the meta/playerbase. I haven't seen a Nasus without Stormraider in months. If Riot didn't see Stormraider Nasus being stronger than other keystones, in addition to the months of Ardent Censer being ridiculous and essentially destroying Worlds, I have little faith in new runes not being a disaster.

Dr Poro1 votes

I think tht in lower ELOs, people may not use that keystone often enough because, you know, it doesn't deal damage.

General Esdeath 5 votes

Next you'll tell me I can go full AD Riven with the new runes

Serika Zero1 votes

how about Play Diana as an Assassin? you know, like most of the playerbase is playing her and she works that way?

but then you go and riot says 'Diana is a diver!!!!!!!!' despite the play style that works the best for her being hated

Gosh Darn2 votes

Stormraider Nasus was extremely common, but now Phase rush is crap in comparison and the 5% CDR rune isn't even in the same tree so there's even less incentive to use phase rush.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

But those are just the obvious choices. Do the video producers not play the game?

nomeensno10 votes

Honestly the whole thing is hilarious to me. They tout this system as a way to change things up, and then go ahead and re-balance every champion so they feel the same as before. Then they go ahead and remove variety by providing seemingly fewer choices overall. This whole the stinks. Also can someone tell me (before I go ahead and blow the blue essence on it) did they change the hextech mystery champion purchase? Or just 2.5x the price for shits and giggles? PS mastery 7 costs almost 4k blue essence (as well as the shards) now.

Verxint15 votes

I see your point, but in reality the old rune system didn't offer much real variety. You had the same setup you used for X champion in 90% of situations. I think this one is an improvement, but it's not without flaws of its own.

Fairyfleur2 votes

Yeah, you'd normally go the same mastery page every single game regardless of matchups. Runes were the thing that you wanted to change based on the enemy team but you couldn't alter them in champ select.

This new system is no different. Most champions are going to be pigeon holed into a certain build path no matter what based on their scaling or kits. This isn't new, it's really just more of the same with far fewer choices. In the old System I would always have similar Builds between champions but I could have one with CDR, AS, Health and MR/Armor. I could also have pages with lethality or AD. There is no way to mix and match all these options anymore. This is far more restrictive and binary than what we just had.

bàn9 votes

you can never play your own playstyle in this game because eventually something is gonna become meta or the go to build for each champ. they should have just scraped runes and masteries completely I M O

Xonra2 votes

There are already multiple "Sure you can have your own playstyle, but realistically, here are the "Best" things". It didn't take a full 24 hours (Goldenglue for example already did one)

deadlychuck5 votes

Well that's because the purpose of runes reforged wasn't to create diversity of playstyles, it was to reinforce the playstyles they've deemed acceptable.

Unsurprisingly the playstyles which continue to exist, they find acceptable, because they haven't gone out of their way to make them unreasonably weak or outright removed them.

CourteousCrouton5 votes

These new changes are the worst thing to happen to league. You get only two sets of mastery/runes without being able to change the garbage standard setups, TWO! And I used to complain that 20 mastery pages was too few! Come on now, there are well over 100 champions in this damn game. Now, you simply cannot be flexible with a wide champion pool without dumping tons of money into pages. I unlocked and bought these champions, I want to be able to play them without being crippled with so few preset options. Seriously, I paid enough time and money into the game already, I'm not buying your dumb pages. With the general public only having so many presets, if they don't get their choice in lane/champ (blind pick, or bans), they are astronomically more likely to flame, intentionally feed, poorly perform--basically ruin your team's game experience. All your collective success in improving community with honor ratings... say goodbye to that. Let's not throw the game into imbalanced chaos for 2 months while losing players to the stupidity of having to completely relearn the game. You have, sorry HAD, an amazing game for years. For the love of God, why would you want completely change it so much!? I understand that pre-season changes are typically big ones, but this is purely a money grab tilting the game towards pay to win (more pages => more champions you can actually use successfully to counterpick with).

Sammystorm1 votes

wierd I have 20..

Ryusaether1 votes

The pages you have are based on the runepages you had before.

The difference is that you can edit the new runes like you did with Masteries in champ select, so you technically don't NEED more pages, you WANT them because you don't want to change those in select and have preset pages.

If you don't want to waste BE/RP and you aren't lazy, you don't need more pages.

SadKill1 votes

I have four and I'm able to edit my two main ones on the fly for different matchups in the lanes/champions I have them set up for and have the two others for champions or roles I don't get often.

Xonra3 votes

Yeah I laughed pretty hard cause a friend pointed this out to me (before I watched the videos) and I couldn't keep from audibly giggling a bit.

"A thread summarizing a summarization of a video that's supposted to summarize the advantages of the rune pages"

See? I can summarize and give it a negative undertone aswell. The videos explain how the runes synergyze and amplify these champions' playstyles.

Murl0ugh13 votes

The argument is they say "create new playstyles" then show us champs doing the same playstyle they've been doing since before the new runes.

It isn't just about being a negative nancy.

Verxint5 votes

Then don't lead every video with literally these exact words: "Runes reforged lets you customize your champion to create whole new playstyles"

If you're gonna try to summarize a post, try to actually understand what it's saying.

I admit failing there but my point still stands. Your thread makes it look like you dislike the videos in general.

Actually, what these runes are doing, is enforcing metas even more.

SadKill1 votes

Funny thing is, the meta usually comes from the players, and changes in meta usually comes from players trying new things. See, MF support and EZ jungle.

MetalGearTeemo1 votes

When pros try new things you mean.

Riots shown several times that playing off meta is a bannable offense
