Unpopular opinion: Keep upvoting, remove downvoting

If I like something I upvote it. I think everybody uses this feature the same.

If I don't like something I just ignore it. Not many people do this. In general when you politely disagree with someone on a topic they will then systematically find all of your other posts on the same thread and downvote them all to make you pay for disagreeing. Then the onus is on you to do the same because otherwise people will assume you already did that to them and they got an upvote on top of it.

It's just childish and dumb. Nothing is gained from it. If someone writes something truly not worth reading then report the post, that would be enough.

Upvotes are healthy for the board. Downvotes promote tribalism and pillaging. Please consider removing them and promoting the report button as the proper means of filtering unwanted content. I think we'd have better discussions and a more diverse ecosystem of ideas overall because of it.

The way I see it, downvotes are basically just "I don't like this thread because I don't agree with it, it's a bad thread overall, etc. I will make this known by downvoting the post and leaving a comment if I feel fit."

It's basically a way to know if your thread is good for whatever reason it may be. That definitely sounds flawed, but there's logic in that statement I swear xd

It encourages the boards to be more of an echo chamber. It's nice to think downvotes are usually interpreted as just things people don't agree with but look at what the feature is used for: low-effort posts, unpopular opinions, things that are flat out uninformed, and things that should have just been reported. That's four distinct categories.

It has such a general use (and most are for things that are legitimately negative) that the overall opinion of downvoted posts is understandably to avoid them, and less mainstream/popular ideas get punished as a result.

LOL, what are you talking about? If that was how things were "in general" then there'd be a lot more down votes all around.

Down votes are very applicable for posts that are flat out incorrect or extreme disagreement. Other than that most people vote like you.

The only thing I find weird about upvotes and downvotes is when I come across two identical threads (pretty much) and one has 100 upvotes and the other has 50 downvotes. I guess it depends on time of day, year, who starts voting first?

Yeah I've noticed that too. It's kind of a reminder that it's probably best just not to bother in the first place. I definitely get why Riot tries to ignore this place as much as possible.

Why this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, lmao.

Supporting what I like isn't enough, I need to silence everything that disagrees with me REEEEEEEE

No, this guy only said that it's dumb. Nothing about silencing.

I like how you made an entirely new thread completely dedicated to your victim mentality and paranoia.

I think downvotes only take away from the forum. The most popular threads would still be the most popular with 100's of upvotes. But unpopular opinions would get sidelined less.

lol they did this on GD and it didn't even last 5 minutes before everyone lost their shit.

You still need 3 categories. 1 for issues you agree with, 1 for issues you don't care about, and 1 for trolls.

Lol no one is going to want that boards is a generally negative place to begin with. Also boards has its biases (obviously not everyone thinks the same but generally speaking more people hold certain opinions over others), which tends to show itself in upvotes/downvotes.
