So Hyped for the New Runes!

i cant move wtf··70 votes·2,862 views

I know the boards hate change but I can't wait for this to launch. I hope the runes yet to be revealed are even crazier than what's been shown already. Everything I've seen so far look totally cool and interesting and I can't wait to theorize about op synergies. This is why Riot's the best game company in the world!

Rito has serious issues. BUT I'm still hyped about the new runes and masteries too. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I'm not. It's looking to be a real shitshow. Too much "WOW! You can do that now?" and it's really not necessary. Flashing while you don't have flash? 60% AS? Changing summs mid-game? How do you balance this? I haven't looked much into it, but I'm guessing you won't be able to have every single large rune at once, right? There's so many new mechanics and things to worry about, things that are hard to nerf or change ... it's going to not be a choice, as they want it. It will be pick 'X' Rune or you lose, because that's the meta right now. I don't really see how changing summs mid-game would synergize with a specific champion or build. That seems like something everyone would want ... so if you're the odd one who picks something else you're fucked because they can change their gameplay with the click of a button. Same with if all 9 other people take Flash, but you're the one bozo without it ... unless you have a highly mobile champion you are royally screwed. Why can't they just keep the old stuff? [zombie-brand-clap]

Ashen Rider7 votes

What would be the point if you could have every large rune at once? Runes are about choice.

Swarovsko1 votes

Why can't they just keep the old stuff?

Imo runes needed to be changed but these changes are really meh. I was hyped and now I'm kind of disappointed.

Kloqdq8 votes

It's quite balanced.

Oh I can change my summoners middle of the game!

But I lost out on a damage rune that will increase my DPS every 30 seconds (or less!) for early game and the rest of the game.

But I have ignite and exhaust!

Well I'll just play back and force you to want to fight me, get a gank you because you don't have flash and then get a free lane.

There is a trade off and it has loads of counterplay in it. Don't just look at one rune and say it's OP without also considering the rest of the runes. This is just one example but a lot of the runes play out similar. They have highs and lows and also factors to consider with the rest of the game.

Also old runes did nothing interesting. It was basically base stats. Frankly there isn't much thought involved when majority of the games I can just get by with the same rune page for half the cast.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Yeah exactly. The balance, tradeoff and counterplay in this game is prevalent in every role and itemization right now? Right? Right?! RIGHT GUYS !?

ArkVeil1 votes

"Flashing while you don't have flash"

Don't even try to criticize it when you exaggerate it that much. The way it works is it's a timed channel (with a minimum casting time of 2 seconds or something) that lets you blink similar to flash. Completely impractical for combat and it necessitates already using flash.

Glory ln Death2 votes

Not only is it impractical for combat, taking damage puts it on cooldown. You can't use it at all unless you've been out of combat for at least 10 seconds.

SciFi Scrivener9 votes

Things like the new runes show that Riot is a game willing to move forward with new ideas and keep the game play fresh. Thank you Riot!! Keep up the good work.

Thunderneedle5 votes

You need some lipstick to go with that asskissing?

Edit: besides my snarky comment I also have something ontopic to say:

Yes I think riot is going in the right direction. Rune stats didn't clearly affect your games as well as masteries did. Stormraiders is a very visible windowed advantage for example. However the rest of the masteries are also invisible stats. (Bounty Hunter, fearless, . ..) so I think having few very pronounced effects (essentially a selection of 5 keystone "impactfull" masteries) is a good direction.

Unfortunately I'm also quite convinced it will be a balance shitshow and I fear for my main Evelynn who gets off on having 25AP to start the game. Something that will not be possible anymore.

Same issue for all AP champs: that start the game with no AP, AND ap items give you no (or laughably little) AP. AD champs start the game with base AD, AD is now as cheap as AP BUT THEY GET MULTIPLIERS: Attack speed and 250%crit.

So.... right now ad champ win. After this rework AP champs will all be trash tier.

Kloqdq4 votes

They are going to alter base stats, and items to compensate for the lost.

Stevev452 votes

I wouldn't hold your breath.

Kloqdq2 votes

They already said they are. Like a few times now. It's not a matter if they will, it is a matter of they already are. Probably a bunch in testing at the moment.

Stevev452 votes

Just think of the scale and how well RIOT was able manage changing one class at a time. Every champion will be affected, and how/if they are compensated will have large effect on each champions/classes play style ans power curve.

Many champions are going to fall through the cracks while the effort is spent trying to tone down the super OP situations that are created by the changes.

Kloqdq1 votes

Hey I am not saying they will successes. I am just saying they are going to go through and make adjustments. Champions like Marksmans will get bonus AD and attack speed and they already teased that Doran's Dagger item that gives AS and helps cs'ing.

Yes many champions will probably fall through the cracks but I am not going to call it yet.

Votable Jester4 votes

I doubt they'll be giving mages more mpen or AP...

I mean when was the last time they buffed an AP item? Maybe they'll start giving champions a base AP, or maybe they'll just increase base damages a bit?

I mean there's plenty of ways they could help mages after the change, but this is one area where I'm really doubtful.

Kloqdq1 votes

They will since everyone knows that the lost of 15 base ap on every single mage is just going to kill their early game otherwise. So they will do something.

Votable Jester1 votes

I really hope they do.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

And what about MS Quints, or the 3 AS reds to help last hit, or defensive runes like Armor and MR. Yes there's a rune that give 5 Armor or MR plus 2 for each nearby enemy which is less in lane (+7) than current runes (+9 AR or +12 MR). I'll dread facing an Assassin without my Armor Quints (+15 Armor).

Kloqdq1 votes

MS will likely have equal runes to match or mimic it. AS will most likely see a boost to many champions while some weren't designed for that as it was intended (Tanks, Mages for example) Base armor and MR will also probably get boosts with some starting items getting some of the weight to help it so we can get equal values. They won't be as extreme as 15 armor but they may get pretty close.

With Runes being changed it also opens up the ability to buff base stats more often for the balance team. You have to worry less about some stupid think where we buff the attack speed so that person just goes all AD because they have tons of attack speed. Just an example. There is trade offs and we aren't even close to see all the changes Riot has in store because it's not only runes but also items and champions.

Steelflame2 votes

One of them said that many mages are going to get innate AP per level or base AP.

Unfortunately I'm also quite convinced it will be a balance shitshow and I fear for my main Evelynn who gets off on having 25AP to start the game. Something that will not be possible anymore.

Well first off, Eve's gonna get a rework before pre-season happens, so there is that.

Same issue for all AP champs: that start the game with no AP, AND ap items give you no (or laughably little) AP. AD champs start the game with base AD, AD is now as cheap as AP BUT THEY GET MULTIPLIERS: Attack speed and 250%crit.

And to this, I believe when first talking about the new ruins they said they'd give AP champs some extra AP at the start of the game as free base stats. I don't remember where I saw them, but I know they did.

HeresyHorus1 votes

Rune stats didn't clearly affect your games as well as masteries did

So Wrong ... there are/were some really unfairly powerful stat runes.

  • flat armor pen marks and quints used to be pretty crazy strait from level 1 to mid game for anyone AD.
  • lethality marks and quints, while not as crazy as armor pen, are still much better than those magic pen ones since almost everyone starts with way less armor than mr and anyone can take the anti mage rune combo too.
  • +15% attack speed quints ( 1.25 * item 1042 from level 1 ? old armor pen runes changed with lethality but this lasted all this time ? ... W.T.F ! ).
  • scaling hp/mr seals and glyphs ( anti mage ) combo.
  • crit damage marks and quints, +20% to +33% damage amp for crit builds ( pretty easy and cheap now literally any AD damaging champ can get item 3046 item 3031 with no problem ) is freakin crazy, and u can just shove that 1% crit chance mark and auto ur enemy after a streak of normal autos on minions for that good old cheese - laugh.

i am glad all that unfair shit will go but i dont know how new runes will fare cuz i dont have pbe so i am not hyped either.

I will thank anyone who will post a list of what they will do or point me to where i can find them.

They seem way too powerful. Nor very happy about them.

The idea of them sounds great, I just think some of them may be overpowered. Might take a while to balance them all with all the champs in mind.

I'm not. Instead of fixing and updating champions, they are wasting time on this and going to have to spend another 4 years updating and balancing champions around something. I mean they just got the balance right with Keystone masteries. Now we have this coming and it doesn't seem like Riot can just leave well enough alone. The new rune system is just going to be a bunch of hidden mechanics surrounded by a bunch of other hidden mechanics that will make the game even more frustrating to play and learn. I just wish they would have an entire season where something is not OP.

Sam ruins are one of the biggest pains in the ass of league right now. Both in trying to get new people to play and while simultaneously being a huge grind considering how little ip you make games.

And I'm double excited that they are creative Keystone like things instead of just boring stats that most people are going to just Google. Everyone immediately jumps to worst-case scenarios and ideal situations in order to convince folks that everything new is broken, but frankly I think a lot of these aren't nearly as bad as people think. Can't wait for them to hit the PBE so we can see some footage!

SpiritOfOdysseus1 votes

Exactly. Lets say a new player is a MOBA veteran and makes an account. They might stomp other new players and get noticed as a "smurf". Now their MMR puts them with veterans who've been playing for years who have half the champion pool and 10 specialized rune pages, while the new player can barely afford a 3.1k IP champ let alone a specialized rune page- they have to rely on basic AP or AD pages that may not be good at all for certain champions. The game puts new players at a crucial early game disadvantage.

The new runes and masteries system lets you change them in champ select, you wont need more pages unless you are lazy lol

same Fizz 24 second ult cooldown hehe

SteelMankind1 votes

Same. So much of the fun of this game comes from theorycrafting new strats to try to maximize gains from the changes Riot introduces before they become meta. People who complain about them (like all those 'Keystones add too much unnecessary power' topics) should just play a fighting game or something because such a huge part of the League experience for me is the RPG-esque min-maxing runes, masteries, and build setup.

EinarUlfar1 votes

I'm excited about everything that isn't Ultimore ('cause I don't wanting people Ulti'ing more tbh.)

Votable Jester1 votes

I just wish there was more CDR available in the runes or that they'll at least add a high AP item with CDR aside from Morello because I currently use scaling CDR runes to get to max CDR with as little defense as I want (20% scaling CDR if just Morello for CDR, 10% if I need the defense of Zhonya's or Banshee's).

ninjaroxas1 votes

Im just worried since riot has a habit of fixing what isn't broken and the last big new thing was plants so ya.

even if it's fun to theorize about thm, you also have to remember that in the end you will have to face them. Let's just hope that there will be no op synergies for one classe that is stronger than the op synergies of other classes

I'm glad they're changing runes/pages they were p2w

but the way they're changing it is going to make another un-balanceable aspect... they're just making a bigger brother version of keystones ... and Riot can barely keep keystones balanced

Sam ruins are one of the biggest pains in the ass of league right now. Both in trying to get new people to play and while simultaneously being a huge grind considering how little ip you make games.

They could boost how much IP you get or link runes to Masteries somehow to remove the grind. Removing the runes all together is gonna suck, being able to customise champs how you want is one of the best parts of league, and a lot a champions depend on it incredibly (Nasus, Vlad without cooldown runes off the top of my head). The game is gonna blow balance wise without them, hence I'll likely be taking a leave from the game unless they actually manage to balance the game without them, which is doubtful as many people have complained about them in years past and riot have said the game is balanced around them and removing them would break the game, same with summoner spells. The problem is IP, not the runes.

Dextix LT1 votes

Boards dont hate change, they hate shit, unbalanced and unpredictable change. This is going to completely break the game and champions, the game will be unplayable for months. Fuck, remember what happened with keystones? This is going t be 100% worse.

rtbf2256182411 votes

I'm sure it'll be fun but it won't be fun for the losing side. In any way. League is becoming URF with brainless amounts of damage moving in.

PaffWasTaken1 votes

We don't hate change here on the boards, quite the opposite, we love it. The reason why we are sceptical about the rune changes is because any "changes" made by riot concerning gameplay all turned out to be complete failures recently. Now that they are changing a big aspect of the game to make it even bigger, we are kinda all scared that this whole situation will just become mastery rework 2.0 : the nightmare's return

TimX24968B1 votes

only thing I'm hyped for is to get cheesed/cheated in a duel/teamfight because of one of these "runes" (gimmicks), causing the lane/game to be lost.
