Please help me develop my point better

Let me give you some background info. Me and 4 of my friends compete together in a LoL team at our school. Our support just began to main support, and does not have many support champions, and mainly just plays Leona. I used to main support, as well as adc, so I do have a bit more experience on this topic

We were discussing our champ pools, and me and our adc suggested Thresh. Our support does not want to play Thresh, because he says that he and Leona fill the same role, which he says is a kill lane, but Leona does it better, so why play a sub-par champ.

There are a few points I have against his statement.

  1. I believe Thresh has more kill potential than Leona if he is played well.

  2. Even if Thresh has less kill potential, he brings in so much utility, and is useful in many more situations than Leona is.

  3. Since we play together and are able to communicate out loud, I believe it gives Thresh even more potential to make plays than Leona ever could.

  4. Thresh's skills can be used in many different ways, where as Leona can really only initiate and set up kills.

When I made these points he said that even if Thresh is "above average" in alot of ways, he would rather have someone who is really good at one thing. He said that there are supports who outclass Thresh in every aspect of support champs (sustain, poke, kill) and that He would rather just pick a support that is good in the team comp we choose.

DO you think I am right, or do you think it's better to have a champ be really good at one thing?

They are both lane bullies, but Thresh sets up better ganks with his lantern. Honestly, you should tell your friend to not be so balck and white about champions. I used to be a support main, and they are very nuanced. You have to check the synergy with the your teams ADC, and your match up agains the other teams ADC/Support.

tl;dr -- Thresh and Leona are both top tier supports. Your friend is incorrect.

I think you should let buddy play whatever the hell he feels like if he's more comfortable with it than what you guys are trying to push on him. If someone doesn't want to play mid-lane and they get forced into it one way or another, would you not expect their performance to suffer even slightly? Why should the same not be true regarding champions?

Let buddy find his own strengths rather than trying to get him to find the ones you want him to find. And to be honest, you're both wrong to some degree, but you're both also right to the same extent. Leona and Thresh are comparable, but each brings their own advantages to a team that the other lacks, so you're basically comparing apples to apples in this scenario. They're different, but not different enough for a big debate.

A important question is what are the Op's 3 favorite Adc Champs?

thresh has much better peel than leona does

Similarities: Both are kill-lane supports whose damage potential is mostly used to set up kills for their allies. Both have substantial single- and multi-target CC. Both are tanky supports that build more defense to support diving for their carries. Both have a core spell used to engage the fight.

Differences: Leona has no harass; she has to go all-in. Meanwhile, Thresh can choose whether or not to go in on a fight, or to just let the stun set up a target for some easy potshots before the fight. Leona has (a little) more hard CC than Thresh, and Thresh has (a little) more AoE than Leona. Leona's damage potential is higher than Thresh (due to her passive). Thresh can protect and rescue his allies directly through his W, and his CC is better at peeling off of allies.

In the end, it's up to your friend, whether or not they want to play other supports. But, while Leona has some similar design traits, there's a difference in synergy potential--which allies work best with them--because of their different kits.

Instead of comparing soda to gatorade, try comparing a ratchet to a wrench. Both are designed to remove nuts from bolts, but one is better in some situations than the other because of how they work.

  1. Thresh is not a kill lane. Hes a flex pick, meaning you can first pick him and fit him into any comp / lane because hes a master of all tricks of the trade.
  2. Thresh counters the balls out of leona. He does not fill the same role. he is used for peel rather than engage.
  3. Dont make anyone play a champ they do not want to play, they'll probably play X champ like shit
  4. leona is better for an engage comp and better for your 3rd point, she can hard engage and cc out a whole team for a brief while letting everyone get their shots in.

Thresh has a bit less kill presence in lane because minions can block his hooks and he is also a bit less tanky than leona generally is. However thresh also provides better peel and can be used defensively in lane much more effectively than leona can. Leona has very strong all-ins that thresh really needs to land a hook to pull off, but thresh has much more play making potential if you really get good with him. Leona's ult is very powerful for setting up combos, but thresh's ult is a bit more reliably although not quite as powerful, it still can be used defensively much easier. Bottom line is leona has much more allin/kill pressure, but thresh has greater utility for other purposes besides getting kills.

Of course this only applies to support thresh. I play thresh as an adc and 1 - shot people.

Leona and Thresh both have kill potential and the ability to be lane bullies, but for different reasons. Thresh can reposition enemies (which can be a... DEATH SENTANCE sunglasses). Leona has more all-in potential, and Thresh has more peel. I personally think Thresh scales better (infinite scaling = better). Thresh also has his lantern. However, Leona's ult is much better (she can aim it, it can stun, and by the time the slow percentage is that high, the exact value doesn't matter much, it still may as well be a root). Also, Leona is tankier early due to her W. It all depends on what you like to play.
