What is the nexus
and why is it important to not let people hurt it?

maybe it's a huge energy-filled crystal that fuels a whole city. Its destruction would cause this city to lose their energy source forever.
But then, why place something so important on some sort of rift where it can be attacked by 5 sneaky dudes after destroying some stone turrets stacks of tissue paper.
Doesn't matter anyway, half the time people just dance around it. Might be come kind of ceremonial thing.
