Wtf does it mean to be a support anymore?

Back when I started in season 3, while it was a somewhat boring role, it had a reasonable impact on the game and a fair amount of pressure in lane. At this point, virtually any champ with some cc or a mage can go bot and be viable. Now that you've killed sustain, can we tone down the damage on some bot lane picks? You just buffed the sh*t out of Zyra with that root increase. Lulu can shield herself and just walk up and pelt me with autos pretty safely. Nami free-trades for laughable mana costs (unless you're one of those who like to spam her bubble for some reason rather than abuse her auto attack range.) And just going a bit off topic, Janna is still an issue: her point-and-click exhaust 1) shouldn't even be dealing damage and 2) the slow is simply too strong.

And now you've got Pyke coming in as a new "assassin support." You know that old saying "the best cc is death?" Well, there you go. Like forget his one bit of utility (the hook) for a second and re-examine how much damage he and other "supports" have been contributing. I've more often than not taken just as much damage from the enemy support as I do from the enemy marksman. Hell, back when Aftershock was stronger, I took a lot More damage from supports. Pyke only makes this issue more obvious. I think it's fair to say most traditional supports have too much pressure in lane nowadays. And again, now that you've gutted a lot of marksmen sustain, I think a viable way to balance this whole mess out is to increase mana costs for said support champs. Just for some perspective, old kill-lane champs like Blitzcrank Thresh haven't been touched in at least a year and could use some buffs of their own to be relevant in today's meta. I bring them up because they're actually balanced in the sense that if you make a mistake with either of them, you're punished greatly, especially in terms of mana costs. Blitz's grab is 100 freaking mana; almost half his mana level 1, and it's easily countered by sitting behind a minion or by simply poking him down when possible because he otherwise offers nothing else for 20 seconds.

Granted, kill-lane supports got buffed by reducing marksmen armor, but I'd really like to see more real "risk" across the board, especially for mage supports in the next few patches after these changes. Mana cost increases, support champion health nerfs of their own, or better yet, damage nerfs/caps. Maybe even better incentivize going Inspiration tree first.

Lulu can shield herself and just walk up and pelt me with autos pretty safely.

A Lulu that does that willy nilly and doesn't lose near all her HP is playing against bad players.

Lulu shields herself and begins walking toward me

Gee I wonder what she's about to do.

Um, they did do a lot of the things you asked. It just works out that those of us who got sick and tired of getting steamrolled because of weak ADC interaction learned to mage carry the lane. And we got pretty good. Essentially, sounds like what you're asking for is supports to be utility only. I'd say start playing the mage type supports. The only good ones are lulu and zyra imo. Nami is still pretty potent. Raka can mitigate a ton of the mage damage. IDK.

Oh, and the reason your buff idea for thresh/blitz is negligible is because people got really good at countering their hooks. Especially with a zyra in the lane.

Being a Support has always and still does mean the same thing it has and still does. Being as effective as Possible with the least amount of income, as well as having a kit that encourages and rewards playing with teammates.

Yes, Shen is a Support. he even has Support trademark shitty waveclear as a weakness.

A Common trend you will see is these champions tend to have elements in their kits that are focused on assisting and empowering allies specifically, usually but not exclusively in the form of an allied targeted ability.
