How to play Lissandra effectively to her strengths?

I like Lissandra's story, and recently got Program Lissandra from a chest. Played her again, she does require some finesse. Champion.GG doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence, but as I recall the last thing she received was a nerf to her health per level for being too tanky among burst mages. (Actually I had to look up what the actual reason for the nerf was, I didn't remember it.)

From that I gather she should be in an OK spot even if her stats look atrocious. What are the secrets to playing Lissandra effectively? Itemisation-wise, I tend to go for Morellos, but I'm starting to feel like I'm making the wrong itemisation choices and building her like a Lux or Viktor.

Should I grab Hextech Protobelt and Rod of Ages?

those items sound good to me but i dont play liss. I find the guides on lolking most effective when learning a champ

Edit: most of the liss guides on top are stale from like 6.19. I dont think she changed much since then but the match up section might be inaccurate

I am not sure what your playstyle is, but I stopped building RoA on her. Usually, on my first few shops, I will get a Last Chapter, boots, and a defense item (null magic mantle or cloth armor). Then I will finish the Morellicon and (or Zhonya if against an assassin). It depends on match-up, but I found that I wanted to rush those items first, and so of course, didn't have resource to build RoA to make the investment worthy. However, I like Lissandra because she is more versatile with her item builds than many other mages, so its up to you.
