Udyr Changes

I realize there are already Udyr nerfs being discussed but they're not going to be enough to sate (pun intended) all the outcry against him. This will be my third time talking about this but I'm going to keep bringing this up until a real conversation happens over this.

I think there is an opportunity here to rework Udyr while keeping his identity without ruining who he currently is.

I think most of what people complain about can be negated by making Udyr an energy based champion. Energy would be perfect for him, I'm sure Riot could create a way to reward him for combos but stop him from just having a permanent bear stance up all the time. Monkey's Agility would just have to be adjusted to make this possible. Udyr is originally Ionian in his lore (before they updated it but he's still cool with Ionia I think) so he'd be amongst the likes of Akali Shen Kennen and LeeSin (who is actually mentioned in Udyr's lore and brought him to Ionia) so it fits thematically. It gets rid of his awkward early game and prevents him from all the stuff people are complaining about mid-late game. It makes sense, in the process it would also even out the difference between Tiger Stance and Phoenix Stance because one of the main reasons why Tiger Stance isn't as good in the jungle is how much mana it demands. The rest of his kit could be kept the same or similar. I'd actually be VERY EXCITED to see this change come to reality.

I'd like to mention that I've been playing for Udyr since season 2 and have always enjoyed Tigerdyr over the standard Phoenix builds. This idea is based on equalizing the two for the jungle and top lane while adjusting this no risk no reward interaction he has with his stances currently after building mana from item 3078 item 3025 item 3110 and other items as well. For a champion that operates around a GCD, energy makes perfect sense because players have opportunity to be rewarded for sequencing abilities in a certain way (e.g Lee Sin needs to AA to keep his energy replenished and thus is punished for facerolling) but aren't enabled to spam whatever stance is convenient.

I disagree with the stigma that Udyr is a low skill and toxic champion, if there was more clarity to why he is unique this stigma might be resolved. If the prior suggestion was not enough I have a few other thoughts that might be interesting to implement:

  1. Increase his max level to 20 (no additional skill points but just more scaling for late game)
  2. Unique benefits at max ranks of Tiger Stance and Phoenix Stance (but only one can hit rank 5)
  3. A cast limit on stances (charge based system) (can't be used X number of times in quick succession i.e Q,Q,Q,Q,Q won't work but Q,Q,E,W,Q is fine)
  4. SLIGHTLY quicker AA animations (his current ones feel bad, even on Spirit Guard)
  5. Base nerfs to the shield health of Turtle Stance but a small health scaling (+5% of bonus health.)

If you disagree please explain to me why, I appreciate any and all criticism towards the treatment of my favorite champion.

Thank you for reading this in its entirety.

I never said that Phoenix was/is OP, I said that it's better than Tiger. Phoenix has been the primary choice for a few years now and it got even relatively better with the introduction of Runic Echo. Changing the type of scaling on Phoenix doesn't make that much sense because the current on hit ratio is fairly low, if they lowered it, it would only affect the Runic Echo build and not address it being more efficient than Tiger stance.

  1. Phoenix provides AoE damage.
  2. Phoenix is faster for clearing jungle/waves.
  3. Most of the value is in the persistent effect and as a result consumes significantly less mana.
  4. All of the damage is magic damage but still requires lots of basic attacks (Tiger only has physical damage)
  5. Phoenix has high base damage, so you don't have to build damage to get efficiency from the ability.
