Veigar's actual place in the meta. (Not asking for buffs)
I'm here to talk about my favorite champion, mostly because of all of the posts showing up begging for buffs. Most of these discussions are pointed towards his E. In this post I'm going to try to be short and to the point on why Veigar's E is not his problem, it's his identity.
His Stun This ability, despite popular belief, is still almost as strong as the old stun. These changes have shifted him towards the Zone Control type mage instead of instant burst, which I feel is a healthy and just change. Balance wise his W is more of a liability than his stun. However the root of Veigar's problems lies in the fundamentals of his kit as a whole.
The actual problem Veigar is currently walking a thin line between two categories, a zone control mage or a burst mage. That thin line has been the core of his balancing issues, and where Riot is encountering their problem. A zone control mage doesn't do well without a large cc, but a burst mage needs a nuke. These two powerful attributes come together to create the curious case of Veigar. This is the core of his problems, and is hard to fix without a rework. I think Rito is leaning towards a more Zone Control type kit for him. This would probably mean a rework to his ultimate, and ability interactions with his E. His abilities have to have delays since they are so strong, sadly all of the champions he counters (immobile mages) all have a longer range than him. This requires the enemy to make a mistake for Veigar to do anything. Allied assistance is required to do anything above that which gives no reason to play Veigar over champions that can do his job alone, more reliably and without help.
Current Place In the Meta
As someone that plays Veigar quite a bit, I will say he is quite viable right now. The problem is there is no reason to play him over other Zone Control/Burst mages such as
or
(even though she's not in a great spot at the moment). Sadly, the tank meta is a little rough to champions like Veigar and when they shift out, assassin's shift in. Veigar is best picked against immobile AP mages such as
or
but their range advantage entirely relies on the enemy to make a mistake for Veigar to do anything about it. You can still do well with Veigar if you know how to play him, but other than finding him fun there sadly isn't a reason to picking him over anyone else.
i guess what I'm trying to say is, Veigar doesn't need buffs to his current kit, his fundamentals and identity as a whole just need to be solidified. While I will miss old Veigar i know Riot can make something even more amazing that shows his true power. Maybe if we see a rework we can get a full VU as well! (God I hope so).
Hope you all have a wonderful day and good luck on the rift!
i can walk into veigars stun safely idk if its veigars reaction time thats to slow or his spells but even when stunned im long gone before his abilities finaly hit me
