Heal vs Barrier- Here's why they both exist:

Recently I created a post about how I think Riot has actually done a good job with the new Sated Devourer, despite some minor tuning issues. This time, I just want to make a much shorter post about the viability of both summoner 7 and summoner 21 .

For a long time, we would see either exclusively heal or barrier being used by players. One would get buffed and the other would be left in the dust, and then another change would reverse it and so on and so forth. However, in the past few months, a true balance has been struck between the two. Heal and Barrier are now both taken quite often (heal of course moreso due to the presence of every ADC taking it every game). Here's what allowed this to happen:

summoner 7 is an excellent spell for ADCs for several reasons, but the main reason is because it affects you AND ANOTHER TARGET. This makes it perfect for the bot lane, which is of course a primarily 2-on-2 lane. The fact that it can help keep both of you healthy, making it more difficult to choose a target to focus, is more useful than Barrier in this situation and is the main reason that heal is taken by ADCs. It's also worth noting that the speed boost is also a bit more useful for escaping together, and it can also be used to kite more effectively, which is of course extremely useful on an ADC. Sustain is also somewhat more valued in the bot lane because it ADCs tend to be good at taking towers quickly when you port to base, which makes an actual heal better for this lane than a shield.

summoner 21 , on the other hand, is much more suited to the 1v1 environment of the mid lane. Champions like Xerath andLux prefer the individual survivability i provides and don't necessarily require the movement speed aspect of it, especially since most of the champs they'd take it against are pretty much already on their faces by the time they use it (looking at you,Talon Zed Katarina ). The fact that it blocks more raw damage than heal and can't be countered as easily by the extremely prevalent summoner 14 makes this spell more attractive on these immobile mage champions.

I just wanted to pass along this little under-appreciated piece of game info to all you summoners out there, especially with the recent discussion of there being 10 summoner 4s in every game. Good on you for striking a balance, Riot! If you could do the same with the juggernaut reworks that'd be greeeaaaat.

summoner 21 and summoner 7 are inferior.

summoner 1 master race.

Here's a faster analysis.

summoner 21 Barrier doesn't get reduced by ignite, defends against burst better by giving more EHP, and you can use it while CCed.

summoner 7 Heal because you get the move speed boost, you can heal an ally, and healed hp doesn't go away so it defends against DPS better.

The only thing I have ever hated about barrier is that it scales worse than heal while starting worse than heal. You get like an extra 100 shields late game vs hp.

Just the fact Barrier it counters ignite makes it worth taking. summoner 21 againstAnnie is a godsend.

I take barrier on very squishy midlaners. It's also extremely useful against champs that have very good early game and rely on snowballing. If they can't kill you, they don't get ahead- and you don't get behind.

You have a point there my friend! I will consider this next time I go Middle Lane!

You took my exact words on how barrier counters ignite. I always take it on Xerath (except for the times when I've gone bot lane with my friend playing Sona lol), and it has saved my life and gotten me kills numerous times

In my opinion summoner 21 sucks compared to heal in almost every situation. The number difference between them is so tiny AND barrier doesn't have a speed boost so it's probably not even going to be better for yourself. The only time I would use barrier is against zed since his ult gets seriously countered by it. On the other hand champions with executes Garen Volibear LeeSin Elise Jinx can actually do more damage to you if have barrier instead of heal.

No. Barrier is going to be subpar to heal.

We're going to ignore Heals potential to be stronger with multiple people, and the minor MS buff associated with it. The biggest difference is EHP (effective HP). Barrier is going to offer more health, and consistency as well. The problem is Barriers duration. It's incredibly easy to wait out barrier, and then continue a fight. Then, even if the shield gained from barrier is used, it doesn't translate into anything after. Heal increases your HP, regardless of if the fight continues or not.

Now, grevious wounds. This is where Heal turns into a slight game of chicken. Your opponent has to ignite early, otherwise heal works for the full amount. Barrier doesn't impact their choice of when to use ignite, they'll tend to save it as an execute, or to gaurentee a kill. At this point, we look back to the first portion, where barrier doesn't last long enough.

Finally, usage against burst. If you're using barrier to counter Zed, Talon, Katarina, Exhaust is probably a better spell. The one example where barrier might be more useful is a champion like syndra, who can kill you from outside exhaust range.

The problem is, buffing either heal or barrier is more likely to impact bot lane. The primary summoner mid seems to be teleport, so for another summoner to be viable, it has to be better than teleport. Heal or barrier would have to be buffed significantly to remove Teleport from mid lane.

I remember using heal on injured minion waves.

However, at higher elo you will pretty much always see summoner 12 over summoner 21 in the mid lane.

Why? summoner 21 lacks any kind of play making ability like the MS boost of summoner 7 or the massive utility of summoner 12.

summoner 21 feels like a bit of a newb trap for players who aren't comfortable with their champion and need an extra cushion if they mess up.

I think Riot has yet to hit a balance with these abilities. summoner 21 could use a small utility buff, like the MS boost summoner 7 got, to make it more of a "play making" ability.

A possible suggestion would be to add a movement speed reducing pulse at the end of it, similar to item 3800. Just an idea, point is it needs some kind of play making utility to ever be considered a real competitive summoner IMO.

P.S. I really wish Riot would resize icons on their forums to be in line with the text... this post looks so terrible. :(

summoner 7 is exactly why I started taking summoner 14 to bot lane, and it works. in an all - in during early game, the heal cut from their heal trumps the enemy support's exhaust's dps drop especially when you're playing a bursty support/adc.

Dope post, thanks for tips.
