Is it better to get a defensive item for lane on viktor, like an abyssal or a zhonyas or to just skip the lane defensive items and rush a lich bane instead?

You want to get your first Hex Core upgrade for the E Augment, then Rylai's as your first complete item. The slow is really good on Vik right now: it helps you kite, land Death Ray's aftershock, and keep people in range of Chaos Storm for multiple ticks. After Rylai's you finish your Hex Core for the speed boost on Q and the faster Chaos Storm. From there you finish out your build with what you need. Zhonya's if you need the active against a specific enemy champion, Lich Bane for more burst damage, Morellonomicon for grievous wounds. Abyssal is a situational pickup against an AP assassin (mainly LeBlanc), it's also good as a second item after Rylai's against a magic-heavy team. You pretty much always want Deathcap and Void Staff.

Boots are almost always Lucidity for the CDR and lower cooldowns on summoners.

Pretty standard mage set-up: Mpen reds, MR blues, AP quints, hp/level yellows against AP mids, Armor against AD. If you're confident in your ability to play safe, you can substitute 6 glyphs for cdr/level to get a free 10% CDR at level 18.

Masteries are the standard 12/18/0 Thunderlord's build.

Alright yeah thats similar to what i had set up. Is viktor better with thunderlords though or with storm raiders surge?

Thunderlord's. You already get bursts of movespeed from your upgraded Q, so Surge isn't as helpful. Plus TD really helps you bully people in lane. It's especially good against melee opponents: you can start Q and massively out-trade them at level 1.

Im either against a yasuo or a fizz lol. I took exhaust though for the burst lol.

Oh yeah, he does pretty well. He can bully him hard at level 1 with Q and Death Ray can completely bypass Windwall when you place it right.

True haha. I'm not that skilled yet but I'll get there since s lot of people like yasuo. How does Viktor fair against malzahar though?

Couldn't tell you, to be honest. Never had the chance to play the match-up. Supposedly Viktor actually has the advantage if he's familiar with the match-up, though Malz is stronger in lane until you get your first hex core upgrade. The idea is to stay at high health so that if he can't just kill you with ult+ignite. If he goes in for a full combo he has to cast E and Q first, which gives you time to cast your W under him so he can't fully channel his ult.

Thank you. I always got rylais second but ill start getting it first. I just tried out the lich bane and was legit one shotting people. its nice lol. But you're right i should build situationally. Thank you for the help.

you probably wanna build rylais on him from now on. personally. zhonyas isn't that great on viktor. I wouldn't get it. any champion with no mobility doesn't really need it. lichbane is a must build on him now.

Even when playing against champs like leblanc?

ok then you want to buy it or against zed. then you wanna buy it. same thing with any all in assassin. but don't buy it just because you need tankiness because you aren't tanking anything. though if she isn't ahead i wouldn't care for it. right now viktor is all about doing as much damage and zhonyas is slightly less powerful on ap now.

if your against leblanc idk wouldn't abyssal scepter be a better option? . lb cooldowns are fairly low she can pretty much kill you still after you use it.

personally am not that great at utilizing zhonyas and fail to understand it on anyone that isn't like fizz or lb that has a dash to escape after using it.

Zhonya's isn't an every game item, but it's worth it after your core items if the enemy team has a champion with predictable burst like Fizz Zed Karthus Syndra Veigar that's causing you trouble. Against LeBlanc specifically you can also rush Abyssal if she's causing you problems in lane.

As people have said Rylais is core on him now. Zhonyas is pretty much only gotten against Zed ever, or extremely fed Assassins that would just 1 shot you. It's not really core on most mages, and even less so on Viktor... the stats are just bad these days and it's not very gold efficient, nor a needed item for him period.

The same is not true for Abyssal, good stats and good for him against champs like Leblanc as you asked - you could get it 1st against her, then get Rylais after that. Or any difficult magic matchup. I tend to get one anyway, even if it's a bit late, if there's say... 3+ AP in the game (especially if it's ap top, mid, and jg), which happens often now since 6.9.

Lich bane is also kinda core now too, but less so than Rylais. So don't feel bad for getting one and blowing people up ;P
