The most broken champion in LoL History; A theorycraft.

So yesterday I created a thread about fun builds and had my example as a Jungling AP Varus. Someone made a comment about AP Varus being able to hit 100% Max HP Damage. I thought it was initially something of fallacy until a couple of friends and myself who are Varus enthusiasts took it upon ourselves to see if we could theoretically make this true.

For those unaware, Varus W: Blighted Quiver, deals up to 5% maximum health damage, plus an extra 2% for every 100 AP. This is an effect that stacks up three times, and when these blight stacks are popped by any of Varus' other abilites, the % Max HP is taken from the target. On his AP builds; this is pretty strong. But it's incredibly weak early game, and is only really oppressive during the late game where most players would have all of their items

For the last 2 hours we were thinking of what could potentially achieve this.

First; we needed to find out how to deal that amount of damage. To achieve a 100% Max HP Damage, with calculations; Varus would need over 1400 AP.

With the following items; including additives from item passives: 3 fully stacked Rod of Ages, 1 Archangel's Staff, 1 fully stacked Mejai's Soulstealer, and 1 Rabadon's Deathcap. We achieved 1141.53 Ability Power. This totals to 83.5% Max HP Damage.

So we got thinking and started thinking outside of items.

We decided to add the passives from Monster Buffs, as well as 1 time use items like the elixirs. To further boost this limit, we looked at buffs that would affect AP count.

This includes: Hand of The Baron Infernal Dragon Elder Dragon Crest of Insight (Blue Buff) Elixir of Sorcery.

Eventually, after we got our numbers correct we did a re-count. The following items and effects are needed.

  • 3 maxed out Rod of Ages

  • 1 Archangel's Staff

  • 1 Mejai's Soul Stealer with full Glory

  • 1 Rabadon's Deathcap

  • 1 Elixir of Sorcery

  • Hand of The Baron

  • 3 Infernal Dragon Buffs

  • Elder Dragon Buff

  • Crest of Insight

At minimum, this equals to 1473.03 Ability Power At maximum, it equals to 1550.43

Result: 108% Max Health Damage from 3 Blight Stack Explosions.

To put this into perspective: Varus' ultimate; Chain of Corruption roots the first target hit for 2 seconds and spreads in an AoE to other players around it, catching them and rooting them too. It deals 250+ 100% of your Ability Power. A 1:1 scaling AP ratio. Not only do you have now an oppressively strong passive, but coupled with your AP it's now an insanely damaging tool of destruction.

Oh. It also automatically applies 3 stacks of blight for each champion it catches.

So what does this mean?

A few things:

  1. Your ultimate will delete anything squishy by itself.
  2. You can quite literally 2-shot a full HP Build Zac / Cho'Gath.
  3. The easiest penta-kills ever.
  4. You'll never hear the end of people accusing you of cheating and using "bullshit hax!"
  5. "Rito delet this!!!!!"
  6. The most broken and unbalanced champion in League of Legends history. The funny thing about this is, Varus is actually one of THE MOST balanced champions in the game, across all of his builds. Even his current AP Build can only do between 30-45% Max HP damage, and that's only if you get fed to be able to get all of your items by a 40 minute mark at the minimum.

Is this possible to achieve in a game? On most accounts, 99.9% not a hope in hell. If one were to be extremely lucky, as possibly being the .01% to be lucky to snag both the items and buffs and having the luck of 3 reds spawning, as well as grabbing hand of the baron and the 3 red dragons and an elder dragon, it would most likely make your entire enemy team rage quit out of disgust.

Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Sorry bro, the most broken champion in League's history is release Nasus, for much the same reason.

When he released, his ult scaling was 1% of max HP per point of AP, allowing him to reach that coveted 100% maximum HP in damage at a much more modest 100 AP.

Per tick.

In an AOE.

Obviously this was just a bug that accidentally made his ult 100 times stronger than it was supposed to be and was hotfixed almost immediately, but damn was it a sight to behold.

I'm ok with Varus being the second most broken champion in Lol history though. That 100% max HP damage is definitely something pretty cool, if obviously impractical (though realistically you don't need anywhere near that value, it's pretty cool to achieve).

LichKing2341 votes

not to mention his basic ablities out side his Q and R got increased ranged when he did R and if we allow bugs there was a bug with his ult that if you ulted near an enemy it would litterly one shot them like no joke just hit r them dead no other abilties not after the aoe dmg kicked in just boom R them dead i dont know how this bug showed up or how close did you have to be for the one shotting R doge but i think you had to be in melee range

Wind Whistler1 votes

You'd still have to be close enough for his ult to affect them, though. It would still be possible to die before you could instakill someone. Then again, if you used flash (that was a thing back then, right?), you'd immediately be able to kill them. Release Nasus sounds pretty damn fun (and broken), though.

Silmaril1 votes

Flash was not only a thing, it was way more ridiculous than it currently is. It had a bit less than double its current range, a shorter cooldown and popped projectiles. It was truly a terrible time to be alive.

As far as release Nasus goes, he was still pretty strong even without the glitched ult. CC, especially slows, were a lot less prevalent and mobility creep hadn't happened yet, so Nasus reaching an opponent was far easier than it is today.

EDIT: I looked up the patch history for flash, and it turns out that Nasus released prior to the ultra-broken flash I referred to. Flash actually had a longer cooldown than it does currently (360 seconds vs 300 seconds). In exchange though, it traveled a truly ridiculous 1000 units, nearly 2.5 times the current distance of flash. The projectile-popping version of flash coincided with the nerf down to its current range, but also dropped the CD to 180 seconds.

Wind Whistler1 votes

Oh. Yeah, true. I forgot just how much more mobility and CC is in the game today than it was back then.

Also, thanks for the history lesson on flash! It sounds way stronger than the current one.

This is pretty nifty dude, although did you also take into account runes and the scaling AP masteries? Those could give him another 50 or so. Blitzcrank

Nope. This is based off of items and buffs alone and non-scaling AP runes / masteries.

The best part is that it's % max hp magic damage, and thus reduced by MR. All your calculations are therefore worthless. Good attempt though.

Spoofghoul15 votes

Though technically you wont need that 108% anyway, you hit em with ult which does 250 + 100% ap damage so lets say you have 750 which is more achievable, including a voidstaff, that alone deals 1000 damage then you still need to hit them with an ability to proc the blight damage

lets take his q, at max damage without any extra ad it deals approximately 370 damage

Add in thunderlords for an extra 180 + 75 (10% ap) ffor 255

And you are already looking at 1625 damage After which you still get 60% max hp damage which should at that point just kill the target

This isn't even including any basic attacks which would deal 95(base ad) + 26(base blight damage) + 186(25% ap ratio blight) damage for a total of 309

Actually, normally this depends on the target and their HP total.

Say a mid-sized health pool for a mage, let's take Ahri for example. She roughly has 2200-2400 HP by late game. And she has an Abyssal Sceptre. A 500 AP Varus will presumably to 45% max HP damage with stacks alone, but this is mitigated slightly by Ahri's MR, bringing it down to maybe 30-35%. This is based off of stacks alone and not including the ultimate, auto attacks or Piercing Arrow.

Now let's look at a tank. I'll use Thresh as an example because I faced off against this build on a Thresh with a tonne of MR; Locket of the Iron Solari, Mikael's Crucible, Banner of Command etc.

Now, a late-game Thresh tank support should have reasonably high HP, as well as a tonne of MR. I ulted into this Thresh, taking maybe about 1/8 of his HP off with the ultimate. Popped the stacks and dropped at least 25% of his total hp. Rinsed and repeated with autos and Q/E, I still pretty much melted him.

With a champion like Varus, even with MR it's still difficult to stand against him when full AP. His AP Build is known for it's tank-melting power.

SteelMankind2 votes

You're severely underestimating how resistances reduce damage. If Ahri has 12 MR blues and abyssal scepter, she has 102 magic resist. That corresponds to 100/(100+102) = 49.5% damage taken from magic damage. Less than half of the damage you got from all that AP actually goes through.

Votable Jester1 votes

You forgot to take magic penetration into account. 33.57 With a Void Staff, Sorc boots, and magic pen reds, that 102 mr becomes a measly 48.57.

100/(100+48.57) = 67.31% magic damage taken. That's a decent chunk already. If you were to add in a Liandry's/Haunting Guise, it would change to 74.87% magic damage taken.

That's also assuming that the Ahri takes pure mr blues and builds an Abyssal Scepter. If she wanted any cdr blues, the damage would only go up. Also, if she were to rush an Abyssal Scepter, Varus's Q harass would be that much harder for her to take. Even building AP, those will do decent damage early on.

SteelMankind1 votes

Right - his 1400 AP build doesn't have a void staff or magic pen boots.

We're on the same page, mate.

Votable Jester3 votes

In the comment you replied to, he was talking about a 500 AP Varus.

SteelMankind1 votes

Doesn't mention void staff - for all we know he's 3 items in to his 1400 AP build that he's so fond of.

Votable Jester1 votes

He also mentioned it being the late game.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Ahri has 1874 natural Max HP by level 18. HP Scaling Seals is +216, Rylai's is +400. At most she'll have 2490 with both of those, but you didn't account for Runes & Masteries either.

Most broken champ in history..I heard stories of beta TF having his ult as a basic ability, and release Xin being able to 1v5 under enemy towers. Good times.

I've played a lot of AP varus mid and can say that he could never be broken considering all the factors that have to fall into place for him to work. Good, but not broke, even theoretically.

kile1471 votes

Release Xin? That was Devourer+Rageblade Xin last season when Riot gave his heal an AD ratio for no reason.

Spoofghoul5 votes

still wasn't even close to release xin

release nasus was maybe even worse

At least Xin last season had to build 2 items before he did what release Xin could do from level 3.

688 AD let's Illaoi transfers 100% of damage dealt to a R5 e spirit.

So she can 100-0 you while only hitting a spirit that can't fight back. Or double her damage if she hit's you and the spirit with the same tentacle.

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

I don't think that's achievable without infernal drakes though.

Though that's probably a good thing .

Evewynn1 votes

The calculations for this thread included drakes, Baron, elixirs, and blue buff. So not too farfetched

Oh my god, he's fking theorycrafting guys, can we stop spamming "lol what about magic resist?!?!??!"

This is in a vacuum where people don't have magic resist. It's a theory. It's not going to work fully in a normal game, much like how no one does the mega AP-Seraphs-ROA Stacking builds on anyone else.

In normal realistic games with normal AP Varus builds, during the late game tanks are pretty much rendered melted if I can get my hands on a full build, even with MR because of the constant barrage of autos > Q > Autos >E, etc, since Void is usually an item we'd take, and probably couple it with sorcerer's shoes.

item 3115 item 3146 item 3135 item 3100 item 3089, this hits the 500 AP line to deal out the 45% mark. Until there's bigger success with other prevalent AP items, and a lot of success, these would be the current items to build on AP Varus.

Boots are your choice. Depending on the matchup, you'll either have item 3006 to land stacks more quickly or item 3020 to deal with early MR.

Toru Itai1 votes

ahh, I forgot most people buy boots, I get RoA and Ludens instead of boots and Gunblade. The HP on it is keeps me from geting bursted too fast and it has a bit of healing/mana for laning faze.

I don't play Varus so excuse me if Riot changed this interaction a while back, but isn't Varus able to proc 4 stacks of his W by having 3 stacks, using E, then autoing immediately after? The way this is written makes me think they only stuck to the standard-max of 3 stacks.

Ya but everyone expects Veigar to do that. It's his staple.

What Varus' staple is a long, hard AD Poke that'll cut'cha even if you think you got away. Not AP nuking. Which was what the thread is about in theorycrafting sense.

Also; Bulma is best q.t Mai can go get sizzled by Black and Zamasu.

The most broken champion right now appears to be the reworked Yorick. Seeing underfarmed half-health Yorick junglers 1v3 your Toplaner, Midlaner, and Jungler by systematically 2-3 shotting each one while taking no damage is ridiculous. No champion at level 6 should be able to 1v3 a trio of L8's, one of them being his counter-jungler, without taking a bloody scratch.
