Why does everyone think Sion is a tank?

In regards to the announced Vanguard update, I've seen a few posts about how people feel Sion should be handled. First off, the update is for tanks, so why is Sion, a juggernaut, even taken into consideration? Jokes aside, it seems like everyone thinks of Sion as a tank, when he just doesn't seem like one to me. His fighter identity is one that seems to personify him more. Your CC as Sion isn't as assured as some tanks, and your passive promotes building damage.

I don't think Sion should be a part of the Vanguard update, because he isn't one. You don't play Sion to protect your carries, you play him for the engage, the AOE denial. He just doesn't seem like the kind of champion to be included in this update.

Thoughts?

That's what a Vanguard does, they're offensive tanks.

Sion actually is considered a Vanguard by Riot.

That said, a Vanguard doesn't protect the carries, a Warden or Enchanter does. You play any Vanguard for the engage and AoE denial. So Sion is a Vanguard in that regard. He doesn't do Juggernaut damage because his abilities are so heavily telegraphed and have more counterplay than most Juggernaut abilities do.

Sion does, however, turn into a Juggernaut when his passive activates.

The Juggernaut thing was a joke........ Because Tanks and Juggernauts...... you know....... k. Anyway, Sion's secondary role is that of a fighter, and I feel like that prevents him from being part of the Vanguard update.

Secondary roles don't really matter anymore. Sion wouldn't be directly influenced by the update because his kit as a whole is fine.

Actually, I don't know what you mean at all.

Vanguard - Tanky initiator, lots of burst CC and decent mobility, good ambient AoE damage but little damage overall.

Juggernaut - Tanky wall, lots of close range damage, little CC or mobility.

So, what do you mean?

When Riot created the whole subclass label thing, they separated Juggernauts from Tanks, as the two classes represented two very different entities. However, you see a lot of examples of the two crossing over, ex Mundo being called a tank, lvl 7 mastery on Naut is called Juggernaut, those kind of things. It became a form of joke, in the same way that Jhin threads have to be 4's, that the distinction between Juggernauts and Tanks is pseudo-offensive.

Mundo is called a tank by people who usually don't know the difference.

The rank 7 tank mastery title is the worst example of clarity on Riot's part.

You're confused. They never 'separated' Juggernauts from Tanks. None of the Juggernauts have ever been considered Tanks by Riot, they've always been labeled as 'Fighters.'

The 'Juggernaut' label wasn't split from 'Tank', it was split from 'Fighter.' Fighters were split into Juggernauts and Divers. Tanks were split into Vanguards and Wardens.

In the past, before Riot gained clarity and vision into how they wanted the class system to move forward, players have used any of these champs in any role. Mundo was used as a team's tank, for example. Hell, Malphites been an AP Assassin. But those aren't what Riot intends for these champions to be. Some are outdated, but with passes and reworks they'll better fit into the holes Riot has designed for them.

It's not funny at this point.

You see, the problem is that it was never funny. Even with the explanation.

Sion being joked as a juggernaut isn't the same as Jhin's affinity with the number 4.

It's a joke.

You still haven't explained why.

Sion is a Vanguard.

Vanguards are offensive tanks who typically engage fights for their team.

Wardens are defensive tanks who typically protect their allies.

They should really put these definitions and labels in the new in-game UI, with explanations.

It isn't like players would read the bloody things.

We still get "Relic Shield not working on Thresh" bug reports years after the item was released because players can't be bothered to read the first sentence of the item's tooltip.

Just because his CC isn't as assured as other tanks doesn't mean Sion isn't a tank. It just means that he has to aim better.

Sion is basically a big CC threat in teamfights, especially when all of his abilities except his passive are AoE.

Why should having more than one role neglect you from being part of a balance update? Sion is more of a vanguard than he is a fighter.

That being said nothing really needs to be done for him, hes a perfect little cinnamon roll and they shouldnt touch him.
