I'm Iffy on Flash.

I reached my goal for this season with my main account and I have been playing on a new one that is pre-level 12; it does not have the option to use flash. I have to say, I like it better. I don't have it; most of my opponents don't have it. I feel like it is just used as a crutch. There are champions with built in flash-like abilities and to add a flash to the mix, makes for poor game play.

What are your thoughts?

The problem is that there are a handful of champions who NEED flash in order to function. Melee and short range champions with poor mobility would need to be reworked around the lack of flash.

As much as I despise flash, it is a staple to the game in its current state.

The only champs that need flash are initiator tanks with point blank initiation abilities like Galio. Those champs are already not used despite having flash as an option.

I'm sorry OP the general consensus around here is that everyone would rather have the crutch to lean on, and complain that others lean on it, than learn to play without training wheels. You are only going to get downvoted to death like my last thread about this.

Flash gives people who don't have built in mobility a chance to get away. If you want to remove flash, fine. But anyone with built in mobility to their kit is going to have to take a hit as well.

Flash doesn't change the mobility factor, you have one dash they have two, remove flash, they have one dash you have none. That argument is moot, mobile champions are made safer regardless.

Although toning down some champs mobility wouldn't be a bad idea anyway. (I'm looking at you Lucy)

Wait. Wait... so you mean they'll only have ONE flash in their kit now? That's amazing. Honestly, when everyone's using it, the champs who have gap closers are already the winners. It wouldn't make much of a difference if you got rid of it.

This, and the fact that every champion with a dash or jump would need it removed if flash was removed. Aatrox Ahri Azir Caitlyn Corki Fizz Ezreal Jax JarvanIV Graves Gragas Gnar Kassadin Katarina Khazix Leblanc LeeSin Lissandra Lucian Riven Renekton Nidalee Shyvana Shaco Shen Tryndamere Tristana Vi Zed Zac Sejuani

I highly doubt riot can rebalance all those champions( Roughly 1/4th of all champs) just for the removal of flash.

While flash is avaliable, champions that can dash/wall jump have much power from mobility, but it is not only those champions who can do anything. If flash were removed, mobility would mean even more than it does now.

Dryditch1 votes

Why would it need to be removed? They take Flash, just like anyone else. So it's a zero sum game as it stands. Flash away, they flash after you, then gap close. Just take away that first set of steps.

edit: "it" refers to gap closers.

Worgslarg2 votes

I'm referring to its defensive use. One of flash's best uses is avoiding a skillshot, like a blitz hook. If you remove the dash that everyone can have, suddenly only a few champions will ever be able to dodge those skillshots.

Before you say reaction time, let me remind you that the ping for east coast players can hit 150 base, rendering it null and void.

Dryditch1 votes

I'm on East Coast, so I know the pain well.

Granted, flash is just absurd as a spell. Sure it's nice for that final dash away, but I'd rather have a utility spell like TP. TP makes for amazing late-game plays, and it lets you recover from a mistake faster. If I get hooked, I'd rather learn from my positioning and not make that mistake again than escape and go make the same mistake without an escape.

True. If the game was balanced without the availability of flash, by all means, remove it, but it's not.

I would rather see flash as default like recall, and then a choice of 2 other summoners.

Dryditch1 votes

I think yoiu're actually missing my point. The game isn't balanced, even with flash. There are still some champions with extra gap closers on lower cooldowns.

Default flash would still be stupid. Just remove it and let people play smarter. Imagine late game 5 man TP rushes in the LCS. Utility over flashiness.

If you think a champ can't function without flash, that usually means they really need wards. Buying wards in game is far more efficient than keeping a summoner spell just for escapes. If you are using your flash offensively then i think it might make more sense, but i would prefer ignite for an offensive summoner spell. In short i think flash should have its range nerfed.

^THIS

SO MUCH THIS. Unfortunately, unranked and low ranks don't know what wards are, and you have to be fast enough to check your minimap during game.

A few well placed wards can win lanes.

I think flash has the most interesting gameplay of any summoner, so I'm happy that it's the most popular choice.

No flash, RIP anyone that doesn't have mobility in their kit.

Dryditch1 votes

How so? Everyone who has mobility already has an advantage because everyone already takes flash. Why not go from 2-1 to 1-0?

Marthian3 votes

There's quite a world of difference between having zero, one, or two mobility options.

There's always the chance they do not have flash or their mobility spell available. That alone gives champions with zero mobility abilities a chance to escape. It may not be huge, but it's still better than having access to none and not able to escape being jumped on.

Dryditch1 votes

I've said it before. I play low-no mobility champions on the east coast. Zero mobility options means learning to play smarter and accepting consequences.

I'm no great shakes, and I'm sure a Lucian or a fizz would make my game even better, but they're not my type of champ and i can respect that, along with the people who play them. I also don't use flash, so I'm at the zero line regardless. The way I see it, less mobility makes a more engrossing game for the rest of us.

This is rather easy to address, really.

The solution? Don't remove flash, modify it: For X seconds after using a dash-type ability, Flash is disabled (let's say 5 seconds to not overdo it, but it should probably be a bit more in reality, something like 7-8). For the same X seconds after using Flash, dash-type abilities are disabled (similar to the inability to use use flash/dash-type abilities while snared, only without the whole 'you can't even walk' aspect of snares).

Champions without their own dashes see absolutely no downside, champions with their own dashes can no longer use them in any remotely chained fashion with Flash, causing it to be more situational and last-resort-oriented to them, and making other spells a little better by comparison.

Hell, it could even get other aspects buffed (maybe a small drop to the cd and a bit of its range back) if that were to happen.

Flash is a constant point of contention in balance. Some feel that it's the most powerful summoner spell in the game, some feel that it's one of the best but still a situation. Some think that summoner spells (or at least Flash) should not exist, while others point out that the game has been balanced around their existence.

Sailor Mint2 votes

You can't Flash Tibbers/Crescendo or Lee Sin Kick Flash without Flash.

JustMyBassCannon2 votes

Even worse, you pretty much can't initiate a fight as Galio without Flash.

flash is riots biggest mistake and now they've let it get too ingrained into the game and are too scared/lazy to do anything about it. they talk about counterplay this and that but then leave the biggest joke of noncounterplay in the game alone

IMHO flash is a bit strong, everyone chooses it and i think it makes sense to nerf the range, but it probably shouldn't be removed entirely for balance reasons. I play without flash almost always and take instead

ADC) heal, and barrier or ignite support) exhaust, and heal or a situational clarity jung) smite, ignite heal or exhaust mid) varies a lot, but exhaust, ignite, heal, or teleport top) teleport, and exhaust ignite or heal

i also think exhaust is underrated and should be carried by 1 or 2 people on the team.

As a jungle main in Silver, I see that flash tends to make a lot of people worse at the game, not better. When I gank they get the freebie escape, provided they weren't way too deep, but I can turn around after a minute, they'll remain pushed up and my laner or I will be up in gold. When many people don't have flash up, you can tell they panic because they often make a huge mistake in escape route, or run around like chickens with their heads cut off

People were complaining about flash back in S1, back then it was far more OP.

Riot refused to remove it, lots of people didn't like it, but they just nerfed it and were then forced to balance the whole game around the stupid ability over the following years. I doubt it'll ever go away.
