I get why Xerath can't instacast Q but it's frustrating as hell.

First, some background. Correct me if I'm wrong: If you're using normal cast, Q will start to charge Xerath's Arcanopulse and pressing it again will fire it in the selected direction.

  • Q won't fire immediately if you doubletap Q, to prevent premature release.* (This is assumption because I don't play with normal cast.)

If you're using quick cast, Q will begin to charge when you press Q and fire when you release the button. Q won't fire immediately if you quickly tap Q once. It will continue charging as if you were still holding the button. (Presumably because the game is "programmed" with normal cast and uses the same misfire prevention for an equivalent input.)

This is quite annoying because it needlessly lengthens the time required for a point-blank spell combo on a fragile mage with a 0.75 second stun.

I personally play with a modified form of smartcast (you have to manually edit the prefs file to get it working) where spells are cast on release of the key. It's great for long-range spells like his W as I can hold it down and actively see the tip of the range before simply releasing the key. It also has the apparently added advantage of letting me quickly tap Q to fire it off without any charge.
