Runes

Two quick questions.

  1. Why can we not change our runes pre-game, like masteries?
  2. Why is it that some so essential to the game so expensive?

Yes I know you can win with wrong/no runes, they just make the game flow better.

  1. Ok so this is mainly for any game you're not guarenteed a the role you want. You have a limited number of rune pages to start with(2 I think). Any additional ones cost the same as a week old champ, that's a lot of game time just to be able to house 1 different set up. I've paid for 2 just so I could have some, this is not a pocket book sob story. So how we to expect people a ranked game who are last pick to even be able to play all roles with only 2 rune pages? Especially when most ip goes into buying champions to start with. Then you have masteries, which are free, that you can change in the lobby. So only one page is needed, but you can create I think 20 of. Way can't we do the same with runes?

  2. When I had first started I didn't know what runes were or what they did. Didn't know how they affected the game. So I bought them at random thinking that just having them did something(lol NOOB). Then a buddy of mine told me the basics. Luckily at the time you could combine them and it wasn't a complete waste. Now (thank you Riot) there are no more tiers for runes. That being said they are still expensive as all get out, when you're starting out that is. I've done collected every champ like the pokemon trainer we all still are and can "slowly" start buying up the runes. When you're starting out you're still trying to figure out which champs you like and what type of player you are so when buying runes, 1. You don't know your style so where do you start? 2. Don't know which ones are best for each champ so which do you buy? If I'm not mistaken there is also a limit to how many you can buy. Not talking about each one, they max you out at 9 regulars and 3 for quints(again thank you riot). I'm talking about types. You can run out of space before buying all of them(correct me if I'm wrong here, just remember reading this somewhere a while back. Could have already been addressed I do not know.)

All that said, I personally have enough runes and pages to play at least one of each role. But not everyone can. I don't mind that Runes cost IP as much as I would like to be able to change them out during the lobby and fit them to the type of game i'm going to play. Instead of having to fit my play according to the types of pages I've set up. In paradise runes would be free and worked like masteries. This isn't a rage thread, this was me sitting down doing a rune page and the thought just jumped in my head. If you read the whole thing, then I want you to give yourself a slow clap, pat yourself on the back, go to the mirror and tell that beautiful person you see in it that "You are an amazing person and deserve good things to happen to you." That is all thank you, and GOOD GAME!

Thank God my friends warned me to get all the runes I needed before I started buying champs.

Also, that's why they are dropping the cost on "base" runes. You're usually fine if you buy a set of those, and simply have an AP set up and an AD set up. Well, up until you start looking to play more competitively.

  1. I feel they can/won't change this. It would probably be easy to change, but RIOT has this whole "plan ahead" thing with the runes I feel, which is why they won't change it. It also comes from an older archaic system when there weren't that many champions and all the "good" ones weren't 6300, so runes weren't terribly hard to purchase back then because you didn't have as much competition back when the game was released. Though it may not be much comfort, RIOT did reduce the price of "standard" runes and for ALL roles you can take flat AD marks, armor seals, mr or mr/lvl glyphs, and flat HP quints and you will do okay in lane.

  2. I can't really answer this since I don't know the answer. I'm guessing because the right runes can win/lose the matchup. Also the ones that have important stats like armor/magic penetration are often expensive because of how hard it is to purchase that stat.
