Fiddlesticks - League's latest (Balancing) Nightmare
I may be reaching pretty far here, but Riot's history of champion release and VGU since s8 gives me reason to worry. I'm not here to complain or to throw stones at Rioters, but to beg for them to avoid another disaster while there's still time to keep the flames from drinking gasoline.
According to Squad5 Fiddlesticks is planned to be "the best Ambush champion" in League of Legends. Exactly what an Ambush champion is and what competition Fiddle faces in this category is up for debate or Rioter clarification but the wording has me paranoid.
Crowstorm is such an iconic spell that we wanted to have the rest of the kit support what that ability tells Fiddle to do. That pushed us toward the idea of Fiddle being one of, if not the best, “ambush” character in the game.
Designing a champion's entire kit around their ultimate to support making it 'the best' at something ... Riot, do you ever once stop and wonder if this is going to be a healthy design on release or has Zoe, Akali, and Ryze v5.5 not been enough? Champions built around a 'big teamfight ultimate' will never be balanced between pro and solo queue, and will end up creating an insane amount of work for the Live Design team. What is the benefit of these type of things?
Maybe I'm wrong and fiddlesticks would end up more like Nunu, but I dont want to see this either. Cold, forgotten, and a joke of a champion just like he was before. So what may a "kit support what [Crowstorm] tells Fiddle to do" mean? Crowstorm wants Fiddlesticks to hide in the backline or fog of war, jump into the enemy team and deal as much AoE damage as possible without letting anyone escape, or until Fiddle is shot down.
Either Fiddlesticks may become a long-ranged champion, with CC that be launched from fog of war and disrupt teamfights, or being near fiddlesticks has some form of a debuff and lockdown. According to "tools to stay hidden", he may also have some kind of stealth - or Dark Wind exchanging Silence for Nearsight (please. Peck their eyes out, not their throats.)
Fiddle’s going to have some fun new mechanics both inside and outside of teamfights that are going to give him a real advantage
This sentence only adds to my fear.
Why is a jungler being designed around Teamfights? What about clears, what about Jungle pathing? what about level 2 trades? What about ganks? Warwick's entire kit was changed to enable ganks before level 6 and make his post-6 ganks something more than "run at the enemy until they flash or you ult" and remains, to this day, the most successful VGU aside from Sion. If not the only Successful VGU aside from Sion.
When Galio got changed, his ult got a knockup (and the taunt was moved to W)
When Nunu got changed, his ult remained in tact but gained Neeko a shield
When Morgana ... 's sister got changed, her ult gained a MS steroid, namely at level 11 and up.
Fiddlesticks' Ult, if not Fiddles himself, may end up getting his Fear attached to him getting near opponents ("After X time unseen/after casting a spell, Fiddlesticks fears any champions within 300 units" kind of mechanic.) or perhaps the Drain can be applied to his R turning him into basically old Swain - hopefully Fiddlesticks doesn't lose the birds this time.
I'm not going to speculate on his kit further, as it misses the point of this discussion.
but please, Please Riot, stop reworking champions trying to make them "The best". Let them be "good enoough". If you want a champion to be "the best" at some arbitrary play style or mechanic, they're going to be unbalanced in some way, and will have to have their numbers gutted into the ground so that any champion besides Fiddle will ever get picked in whatever position he ends up becoming popular in.
