Then make his primary class a fighter. It really bums me out that Riot doesn't consider him enough of an assassin to give him some tweaks, since I really think a lot could have been done. He was the first "real" champion that I picked up and he holds a special place in my gameplay memories.
His tool kit is more of a Diver, but like usual he's one of those cheese'it champions who act like a role that ain't really what he should be, aka a 'fake primary role champion' or like Red'mercy mentioned: "A fake assassin" type of champion. Without his ultimate (which still needs a considerably larger cool down and probably only reduce the vision of only enemies 'within range' of the ultimate and on a shorter duration), he is just as you pointed out, more of a 'smack you down lots type of fighter champion.
You need to also consider that even though LeBlanc, Talon and Rengar have already been confirmed as 3 of the 4 major reworks, it does not completely leave champions like Yasuo(Sub assassin), Nocturne(Main assassin), Akali, Zed, Jhin, Ekko, etc. from being immune to getting minor reworks or just plain and simple patch tweaks to put them more in line with each other. Hopefully something a bit more then just drop the base damage they have further and increase the scaling to promote offensive builds over tank and maul with base damage plays. I for one hope they at least tighten those cheese'it champions, because Nocturne isn't powerful in his other stuff, but because he has that near spammable ultimate, he can constantly pester dive you in attempt to eat you and less you counter play him hard, then your likely going to die easily, especially when your low health from killing other enemy champions.
Besides the current listed major reworks, the champions im hoping for make'overs include Yasuo and Ekko(namely because his Q is a plain rip off of Ahri's and he ends up just spamming it constantly whenever someone plays him then only barrier stun dive when he 'thinks' a opportunity occurs to kill the enemy itself). Be nice to see mechanics and passives fine tuned especially when all the 'burst' assassins have to take a tiny bit longer to setup for the kill, meaning the opponents can have more fun working to cancel out that setup thru some measure, then 'trying' to have fun against cheese'it champions (like Yasuo once again).
