"We simply don't have enough resources to upkeep Dominion."-Riot

And in the matter of mere months they completely re-did the Dominion gamemode. Am I the only one that's getting bothered by this?

No resources to upkeep Dominion my ass.

Riot's position basically is that they don't need to keep champs balanced for rotating game modes, but they do for permanent queues. Keeping champs balanced is an immense amount of work, and very frustrating for large segments of the playerbase when they do it poorly (and of course they still sometimes mess up badly with balance, despite the thousands of man-hours they put to it every two weeks). Adding the DND gamemode might have been 2000 man-hours of work, but it wasn't that much each month for perpetuity.

It saddens me a bit too, as I put nearly a thousand games into Dominion on the different servers I've been on. But when it came down to it, when ARAM was released, I got out of it most of what I had originally wanted from Dominion: Skirmish-based minion-light gameplay.

But the Dominion game mode is rotating schedule. I think they meant they can't upkeep it in the server or something? Upkeep has nothing to do with redoing the game mode.

"Resources" = Testing for bugs, balancing champions, and balancing the mode in general. In that regard, Def Not Dom requires fewer resources than Dominion.

"Optimizing new champions to work with capture points and other Dominion specific stuff takes too much work for how unpopular it is."

Yeah well, unless by chance every champion from Aurelion Sol onwards isn't disabled in new Dominion for that reason we can just add it to already long list of Riot's blatant lies to the community.

First it was because no one played dominion, now they can't maintain it? Maybe because of rotations, but that's never stopped them from having rift, aram, tt, dominion, and a special mode up at the same time.

Getting real sick of people acting like they cared about dominion. Barely anyone actually played the game mode and there is really no reason for it to stay a permanent game mode once they implemented/was planning to implement the rotating game mode option. Having dominion in the rotation just makes a lot more sense

and for upkeep I'm assuming they meant balancing items and characters around dominion (hey remember that patch notes had a separate section for dominion because some stuff would be flat out broken on it, oh maybe you don't because you would just completely ignore it because you didn't care about dominion?)

Upkeep =/= new development

Upkeep:

  • Champion balance
  • Item balance
  • Server space
  • Map assets
  • Queue times

Etc.

If I'm being honest, whenever I see someone complain about Dominion, it strikes me as something people who want to bitch complain about. I don't think anyone complaining about Dominion's removal seriously gives a shit.

One man's opinion.

The "new" Dominion experience is horrendously poorly balanced. All that matters is holding top. Storm buff? useless just hold top. Ultra Minion? useless just hold top. It may be "new" but it's not well made.

They could have Crystal Scar, TwitstedTreeline, AND Howling Abyss in an infinitely better state if they simply had 2 or 3 employees dedicated to alternate game modes. It's really clear that the people who implement patches clearly don't give any concern whatsoever to alternate maps when they push itemization changes for Summoner's Rift. Did you know that ARAM is still using pre-6.9 attributes on some items?

Dr Poro5/29/2016, 8:59:12 PM7 votes

They have enough bandwith They have all the technology required They have a big enough staff to monitor it They had a small but dedicated playerbase

But they didn't have enough fucks to give.

So, nope, not enough resources.

TurquoiseYoshi5/29/2016, 10:09:52 PM7 votes

And they haven't added champion mastery to ARAM or TT even though those are permanent and these rotating modes aren't. That's what I'm most confused about.

Never forgive, never forget item 3073

OP, as far as your post goes, i don't really understand what was the point you were trying to make. Everything Riot adds in the game is costing them resources but the thing here is temporary game mode VS permanent game mode. Permanent game modes actually require a lot of upkeep than rotating game modes.

They've put Dominion into a RGM Queue because these modes have a playerbase and they are short lived. As opposed to permanent Dominion, which is a game mode they constantly needed to keep balanced for the 10 players that played it. This resulted in insurmountably high queue times, unbalanced matches and even low quality games (due to players just not giving a damn and AFK-ing or leaving).

This wasn't something Riot could've implemented a fix for, the playerbase just wasn't there and instead of keeping it on life support (instead of admitting that it's dead) they've cut their losses. However, they didn't remove it and have just added it to another queue that guarantees a higher playerbase and not such a sudden drop in interest in playing it. #I'm pretty sure Dominion players are not dissatisfied.

And there were probably more games on the crystal scar this weekend than there were in the prior 6 months combined.

Sounds like a proper reallocation of resources to me...
