Can someone explain to me how Warwick's W passive works ?

I enjoy playing Warwick a lot, but I still don't fully understand how his W passive works. Sometimes I get the bonus movement speed towards them and sometime I do not, even though I had that movement speed just a second ago. This makes it a little annoying to play as him since I don't understand fully how it works.
